VIRGIN HOLIDAYS has become the first mainstream tour operator to produce a programme based on holidays ranked by their environ- mental and social impact on the destination.


The long-haul specialist has cre- ated the Human Nature Collection programme which brings together all of its product across the globe which meets high environmental and community criteria. Marketing director Andrew Shelton said:


“Many of the hotels and excursions have been chosen because they prioritise employing local people and using locally-owned businesses, so more of our customer’s money stays in the destination.” Virgin has also added more volunteering


holidays allowing customers to help with build- ing projects and teach at local schools in Kenya, South Africa and Thailand. Virgin launched “vol- untourism” trips in 2008. The programme is currently available as an


e-brochure through Virgin’s website as well as its agents’ portal. It may become a printed brochure

if there is sufficient demand from agents. Virgin’s corporate responsibil-


ity executive Jon Winfield said that they wanted to make it easy for customers to book holidays and hotels which helped make a “positive differ- ence” to their local communities. “This is the first time we have


collected them all in one place and we want to make it easier for customers to make more


responsible choices,” he said. The brochure covers Virgin’s main destina- tions such as the US, Africa, Far East and India with both tours and individual hotels featured. Other destinations such as Peru are also included. Salli Felton, Virgin’s responsible business manager, added: “There’s an emphasis on get- ting back to nature and meeting local communi- ties. You can stay with villagers in Borneo and talk to elders, as well as going to see orangutans.” The Human Nature Collection is also being made available through Responsible Travel’s website.

Solo’s adds Japan and Las Vegas


SINGLES OPERATOR Solo’s has added holidays to Japan and short breaks to Las Vegas. The company’s new 228-page brochure, run- ning up to May 2011, features new holidays and destinations including a nine-night escorted tour to Japan priced from £3,185. New short breaks include three nights in Las


Vegas staying at the Golden Nugget hotel. Other additions to the programme include an


extension to the Egyptian beach resort of Hurghada to winter cruises on the Nile. Solo’s has also introduced new ski destinations including La Plagne in France and Canada’s Whistler, which hosted the Winter Olympics earlier this year. Solo’s also offers UK breaks including


Warwickshire, East Anglia and Kent. Prices start from £399 for a seven-night group beach holiday to Turkey.
