OVATION What I learnt visiting Trimble Dimensions

“By creating more advocates for digital transformation, we can speed up the adoption process and this is why I was so interested in attending the Trimble Dimensions event. One of the areas I wanted to focus on was discovering the impact of marshalling for semi-autonomous and autonomous machinery, as I believe this to be one of the next big things for the future of the industry.

“What I saw was where you have a connected worksite and intelligent compaction with pass control you can have a much more productive site. In the case of construction, you have a digital trailer ‘roller’ that follows behind the dozer, rolling the material and only covering it when it needs to. So you can see just how machines can interact with each other when they are connected in real-time.”

Handheld and machine augmented reality

“At the event there were two very different approaches to visualisation that used augmented reality. The first solution was the Trimble SiteVision system, which is currently in development and due to be rolled out soon. This is a handheld device that combines a Trimble GNSS receiver with Google/Samsung ARCore technology, on a Samsung smartphone.

“Trying out the unit at the event, what you get is a very accurate augmented reality display on the phone screen, which shows the structure, in this case a road. Point it in the right direction and the system then gives you a number of viewing options, with information like new design layouts, existing underground services and how a future completed project landscape would look over time.

“The second solution was demonstrated in the cab of a machine. Here the operator had the opportunity to look at the site out of the cab window and then look at an augmented / mixed reality view. This means the operator could see the proposed 3D model mixed with reality, so they could absorb the information visually.

“Looking at all of these technologies and the challenges of adoption, the most important thing that the industry needs to look at is how it can marry the physical with the digital. If done properly, this will deliver both productivity and health & safety benefits beyond anything we see today.”
