“I jumped at the chance of visiting the Cat Compact Store in Cannock to test the core functionality of the machine in a working environment.“
“The other main reason was our need to fill a gap between the much smaller one tonne machines and the eight to twenty tonne range. This is because our customers are now much more focused on getting the right machine for the job. They are also paying much more attention to the true cost of operating a machine, with hire rates and fuel consumption now more closely analysed.
“With a large proportion of our business coming from operated hires, before I decided to purchase new five tonne class machines, I wanted to test them out. This was why I jumped at the chance of visiting the Cat Compact Store in Cannock, as the demonstration area allowed me to test the core functionality of the machine in a working environment.
“On first impressions, I was surprised by how smooth, powerful and precise the unit was for its size. The compact radius design and
GOING MOBILE FOR MAINTENANCE
In addition to increasing his fleet of Cat machines, Fraser has recently extended his technological capabilities and started using

cat.com on PC for some time, as we do a lot of the regular maintenance ourselves. We also use the solution to quickly cost repairs when our equipment is damaged, so we can pass on these costs to the hirer.
“The system holds all of our fleet information in one portal, allowing us to simply order the right parts for delivery to relevant locations, through both PC and now iPhone. We can also login and keep an eye on the maintenance costs of each machine and the fleet overall.
overall visibility was also well suited to the applications we would be using the machine for. But probably the most important element or me was the overall comfort in the cab, which was very good. The control leavers in particular were easy to use and the hydraulics were very responsive. All of these elements convinced me very quickly that this was the machine for us, giving me the confidence to make the purchase there and then.
“Since we took delivery of the machines, they have been faultless, performing really well, with some great feedback from operators. As well as returning to the compact store since my first visit, I have also recommended contacts in the industry to try it for themselves, particularly those offering operated hire services.”
“With our entire Cat fleet performance monitored using the Caterpillar Vision Link™ solution, we also have immediate access to individual machine data. This helps us to monitor everything from hours used, to machine fault alerts. In turn, this enables us to send engineers to site to perform preventative maintenance, keeping our machine uptime and customer satisfaction very high.
“By combining the practical testing of machines with this technology, we can really see the true impact each unit has on the profitability of our business.”
