PROCESS AND THIS IS WHY I WAS
SO INTERESTED IN ATTENDING THE TRIMBLE
DIMENSIONS EVENT”.
Having attended the Trimble Dimensions global innovation event in November 2018, Finning News caught up with Mark Lawton, Chief Engineering Surveyor for Skanska, to pick his brains on how the industry is and should be moving forward with technology, whilst also getting his thoughts about some of the new solutions demonstrated at the event.
Mark dedicates a huge amount of his time in support of individuals and businesses looking to bring new technologies into the industry and in particular the earthworks sector. He is both practical and visionary in his approach to driving change, as he explained: “Getting everyone to change behaviours and adopt new technologies or ways of working is not a simple task
“One thing I do recognise is that machine control requires investment in not just the equipment itself, but those behind making it work, from engineers to construction managers, operators and more. In order to bring the industry along and embrace those businesses willing to make the change, there needs to be a commitment and potentially incentives from both the client and contractor side.
“For example, if you wanted to develop a connected site and had a flexible contractual relationship, agreed by both parties, the contractor or plant hirer could be given time to build up their equipment fleet, fitting the relevant equipment and undergoing training to deliver machine control. This would then deliver commercial benefits to both parties, whilst helping adoption levels.
