I think there’s a new Star Wars movie out; not sure but I did hear a whisper as we were going to print. Just joking. Of course there is a new Star
Wars film out, and if ever we needed proof of how much Disney was going to market the Obi-Wan Kenobi out of it, we’ve just found out. And by all accounts, fans of the franchise are thrilled with this first instalment under Disney’s watch, which should mean there’s a particularly keen group of consumers ready to experience the new Star Wars lands at Walt Disney World and Disneyland when they open in a few years’ time. – the king of intellectually property exploitation strikes back. As is becoming the norm, we’ve news of more
new parks integrating IP in this issue; none more so than the two 20th Century Fox World theme parks planned in Malaysia and Dubai. Yet in a refreshing admission from Scott Ault of
Rethink Entertainment and Leisure, which is designing the latter park, we learn that not all its attractions will be media based: “If you are in a media-based attraction or something which is VR- based, you cannot see all that wonderment on your kids’ face if they are wearing an Oculus Rift headset,” he notes. Fair point. Read our exclusive interview with Scott and
Fox’s Greg Lombardo on page 34. It’s “exclusive” in the same way as his current “exclusive” with Attractions Management magazine. I tell a lie, their interview just features Greg, not Scott; so in a way it is exclusive. May the hyperbole be with you!
