StudentCom invests in new National Backbone Network to meet the future needs of its customers CONNECTING NETWORKS
STUDENTCOM ARE DELIGHTED to announce that they have gone live with their new National Backbone Network infrastructure after 12 months of detailed design, development, project planning and implementation. Over £5m has been invested into this new phase of the network, which not only aims to deliver a more robust and resilient service, but it also provides a solid platform for future customer requirements. The key element of this new
infrastructure involves the unbundling of multiple BT exchanges throughout the UK, strategically selected for their location in popular student cities such as Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool. ’Unbundling’, often referred
to as 'local loop unbundling' (LLU) is the process by which BT allows other telecommunication providers such as StudentCom to provide a broadband connection using their own backhaul network, but BT’s infrastructure for the ‘last mile’ into a customer site. These ‘unbundled’ BT exchanges are
linked directly back to the StudentCom Core Network locations in London, Manchester and Bristol, thus giving more control over the network and a greater level of flexibility to meet growing customer demands. With students representing the majority of its customer base, who are typically high volume users, it is essential that StudentCom ensure there is enough capacity to facilitate this high usage and that the service delivered
The StudentCom National Network
is as reliable as possible, irrespective of the number of devices trying to access the network or the amount of information being downloaded. A dedicated team was formed
to design and implement this new network, headed up by StudentCom’s Technical Director, with support from internal Project Management, Provisioning Management and Technical Field Engineering resources. In addition, an enlarged and improved Network Operations Centre (NOC) has been established which is responsible for monitoring the network and its environment on a 24/7/365 basis. Unite Students, who are the UK’s
largest accommodation provider, with over 42,000 student rooms, are one of the first clients to benefit from StudentCom’s new network infrastructure. However, going forward, StudentCom will be moving more and more of their customers onto this network so they can take advantage of the benefits that the new network will bring. Alongside these improvements,
StudentCom have also invested in a purpose-built Service Desk facility to further improve its 24/7/365 support provided to its growing number of customers across the United Kingdom, and in Continental Europe. Simon Lockhart, StudentCom
Technical Director, said: “The increasing demand for bandwidth from our student residents presented me with the challenge of designing a network strategy for the future which brought growth and reliability more under our control. Working with carefully selected carrier partners we have been able to deliver the first phase of this network strategy and successfully meet those increased demands ahead of the start of the current academic year.”
