Roehampton appoints new Deputy Provost

Professor Julie Hall has been appointed Deputy Provost of the
University of Roehampton and will focus on excellent student academia. Professor Hall was previously
interim director of the University’s business school, and began her new role from January. She will be primarily responsible for
ensuring that the University’s academic departments are developed in line with the University’s ambitious academic strategy. This will include line managing heads of department, coordinating and approving departmental plans, ensuring the recruitment and retention of high-quality academic staff, and ensuring that all academic staff in the University are supported and encouraged to reach their full potential.
Bucks VC awarded CBE 2
Professor Ruth Farwell, Vice- Chancellor of Buckinghamshire
New University has been awarded a CBE for services to higher education. Prof. Farwell, who is due to retire at
the end of January, said of her award: “I am absolutely delighted that my career has been honoured in this way and want to thank all of those people who have kindly sent me congratulatory messages since the public announcement. “I personally feel very humble about
it as the achievements which have led to the award being made are not just about my work as an individual, but what the organisations that I
Student applications hit record high
More than 592,000 people have applied for full-time undergraduate courses starting in autumn 2015, up 2% compared with the same point last year – the highest number ever recorded at this stage. Young people from the most
disadvantaged areas across the UK are more likely to apply to HE than ever before, continuing to close the gap on the most advantaged. In total over 90,000 more women
have applied than men. Demand from young women is increasing faster than from young men, widening the gap between them. In England young women are now 36% more likely to apply. London has seen the largest
increase in demand, with 44% of 18-year-olds now applying. Within the UK there has been an
increase in 18 and 19-year-old applicants, while the numbers of applicants from older age groups have reduced this year.

Boost for city engagement at BCU 3
Birmingham City University has appointed a figure with
significant experience in forging strong links between business and higher education. Professor Julian Beer has been
appointed Pro Vice-Chancellor of Research, Enterprise and Business Engagement. He was previously Pro Vice-
Chancellor at Plymouth University with responsibility for Regional Enterprise and Professor of Knowledge Transfer, roles in which he developed a strong record on business engagement. Julian has extensive experience of the
private sector, as well as of transferring higher education knowledge into commercial or public policy outcomes. As leader of its strategy on business
and employer engagement, Julian will strengthen Birmingham City University’s connection with the city and region. He will also lead research, innovation and knowledge exchange development, together with expanding commercial activities.
