Hassell to design Brighton’s AEC

The University of Brighton has chosen architecture and design studio, Hassell to design its new, advanced engineering centre (AEC) at its Moulsecoomb campus in Brighton. This follows the 2014 win by Hassell to provide a unifying masterplan for all fi ve of the university’s campuses - a £150m redevelopment scheme. The AEC will be approximately 3,000

square metres, with a construction cost of around £14m. The design will include new and refurbished accommodation, as well as high tech and design-led education facilities for mechanical, automotive and aerospace engineering. The Higher Education Funding Council

for England (HEFCE) is backing the university’s scheme with £5m funding toward the project; HEFCE has commit ed to contributing a total of £200m to support science, engineering, technology and mathematics students across the UK. Construction at Moulsecoomb is expected to start in August 2015,

for completion in December 2016. Professor Andrew Lloyd, University

of Brighton’s dean of college of life, health and physical sciences, said: “The University of Brighton is championing the establishment of high quality engineering education and innovative research with partner organisations.

We see this as making an important contribution to the establishment and sustainable growth of high tech companies across the region.” Hassell’s appointment to the scheme

follows the launch of two similar advanced engineering buildings at the University of Queensland in Australia.

Sussex boosts student living

International infrastructure group Balfour Beat y has been appointed preferred bidder for the University of Sussex’s East Slope Residences project. Alongside the University, Balfour Beat y

will design, build, fi nance and operate the £120m project under a 50-year contract. Subject to planning approval, the project will

replace an existing 600 bed facility on the University’s campus with a new living space comprising 2,000 new bedrooms in a range of formats including townhouses and some with ensuite facilities. It will also incorporate innovative student amenities such as social hubs and new student union facilities. Construction is anticipated to start in 2016, and would be delivered by Balfour Beat y’s UK construction services business.
