100 per cent of UK franchisors in agreement!

Franchise specialists and bfa members Owen White Solicitors have conducted an independent survey of UK bfa franchisors to find out how much they understand about the franchise agreements they issue and to discover if the agreements offer a positive contribution to the relationship with potential and existing franchisees. The survey, which was sent to all full, associate and provisional bfa members, revealed that: • 86 per cent of franchisors used a bfa-affiliated solicitor to draw up their franchise agreement, with 75 per cent saying that they did so because they ‘wanted to use a specialist firm and be in the very best hands possible’ • 64 per cent said that their franchise agreement had helped them to positively resolve a dispute with a franchisee • 92 per cent of those surveyed said that they fully understand all the clauses and their purposes in their current franchise agreement • 100 per cent of franchisors think it is important to have their franchise agreement regularly updated and 71 per cent have had their agreement updated within the last 12 months.

Jane Masih, head of franchising at Owen White said: “It is good to know that franchisors appreciate the value of instructing a bfa-affiliated solicitor, acknowledging how valuable advice from a specialist franchise lawyer can be for the growth of a successful franchise network.”

Berkeley Harris

Former bfa deputy chairman invests in Sandler

Sandler recently announced that Berkeley Harris, former bfa deputy chairman and WPA franchise director, has invested in the Sandler business opportunity. Leaving Western Provident Association

(WPA) after 12 years, Berkeley was looking for a new challenge. A former Royal Marine and firefighter, Berkeley saw service in the Gulf, Northern Ireland and served a two-year commission on the Royal Yacht Britannia, so he knows all about facing challenges. An active member of the bfa during his time at WPA, he served in a number of senior roles, including deputy chairman, until December 2013.

“I chose Sandler for its structured model and extensive support,” he says, “Sandler matches my skill set and what I enjoy

doing. My most enjoyable role at WPA was developing franchisees’ businesses and helping them to progress as individual business people. The Sandler system is very good, especially the continual reinforcement of learning and personal development.” “I am targeting businesses around Bristol and have also had a lot of interest from franchisors who know me through the industry.”

Shaun Thomson of Sandler UK commented:

“We have known Berkeley for years and were delighted when he chose to invest in Sandler. With over a decade of experience working in the very heart of the UK franchise industry, his decision to choose us really does give the Sandler system the highest level of endorsement.”
