BARROW HILLS SCHOOL REPLACES PENCILS WITH DIGITAL S-PENS

Samsung Electronics has partnered with Barrow Hills School in Surrey to produce a revolution in teaching at the prep school. Pupils and teachers have been equipped with the latest Samsung Galaxy Note Pro and 10.1 devices and digital S-pens, which connect to Samsung Wi-Fi connected classrooms. Work is shared on 60-inch interactive touchscreen displays installed at the front of each classroom. Barrow Hills selected the

Samsung range in order to create an interactive learning environment, helping their pupils develop a more self- guided learning style. The Galaxy Notes are the focal point of the connected school, providing an all-in- one journal, exercise book, text book, creative pad for design and art, calculator, research tool and more. This new technology means

that pupils can discuss and share projects in real time using Google Hangouts and use the Galaxy Note 10.1’s camera and video functions to record and appraise activities. The Galaxy Note’s S-pen also allows pupils to annotate and correct work digitally, . Headmaster Mathew

Unsworth said: “Barrow Hills is the first prep school in the country to move towards a digital school bag. We are delighted to be focusing on the development of guided, independent learning rather than the acquisition of facts, thus empowering our children to become 21st century explorers.”

Julia McCann from Victoria Junior School, Feltham, reviews the latest end- of-year reporting software for teachers

At this time of year, many teachers dread the idea of spending hours cooped up indoors writing school reports. So when my headteacher asked our school to try Reportbox, a tool designed to make report writing faster and hassle-free, I was curious to see just how much difference it would make. Report writing is a laborious and

time-consuming task. However, since using Reportbox, what used to be a

software is genuinely intuitive. I particularly like the way Reportbox automatically substitutes the correct pronouns for the gender of the child. Being able to see examples of other reports has

also been a great help. If you’re looking for a particular phrase, there is a whole bank of comments from other reports which you can adapt and personalise to suit each individual child. There are only so many ways to say ‘has made progress’ before you run out of ideas! If I could change one thing, I’d want it

to fix grammatical errors more easily, just as you can on a Word document. But that’s a minor reservation. This was our first year using Reportbox, and we’ll certainly be sticking with it for the long run.

ICT provider RM Education is celebrating ten years supporting Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a charity which works to remove criminal content from the internet. Working together for the past decade, the organisations have made real strides in disrupting the distribution of online child sexual abuse content. Thanks to the support of its partners,

including RM Education, the IWF has been responsible for the removal of over 100,000 URLs containing criminal

exploitation of children online. “E-safety is becoming a growing

priority in schools. While the internet can provide endless possibilities for communication and learning, it can also present many dangers. One of our core roles is to help schools address this delicate balance and implement a stringent e-safety policy to ensure the safety of children online.”
