STERNDALE & PEAK

O

PREMIER PEDIGREE HERD OPEN DAY

Becoming an annual pilgrimage, Holstein UK’s Premier Pedigree

Herd Open Day once again attracted people in droves. Izzy Whittaker travelled to Earl Sterndale in Derbyshire to cover this popular event

n Saturday 28 June over 1,000 Holstein enthusiasts travelled the beautiful rolling hills of the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire to view Holstein UK’s 2013 Premier Pedigree Herd winner – the Sterndale & Peak herd. Owned by Bill Nadin and Yasmin Bradbury, the herd has a ratio of 70:30 Sterndale:Peak animals (Sterndale being

Bill’s prefix and Peak – Yasmin’s) and one of the herd’s greatest achievements was last year winning this prestigious national competition. Succeeding as first-time entrants, it really is a tremendous accolade when you think that their 123-head herd has been rebuilt to such a high standard within seven years. What do you mean by ‘rebuilt in seven years’ I hear you ask? Well over the years the Sterndale herd has been sold five times over a 40 year period and after its last dispersal sale eight years ago, the herd was supposed to have been filed for retirement. However with such a strong passion for pedigrees, Bill and Yasmin put their milking gloves back on and within that short time were last year crowned Holstein UK’s top herd. Big believers in cow families, during the day visitors were able to admire some of the world’s most popular and renowned bloodlines including Ashlyn, Altitude, Ghost, Rae, Jodie, Promis, Licorice, Lila Z, Elegance, Papoose, Raven, Spottie, Redrose, Beauty, Fran, Lustre, Romance and Rhapsody.

The day culminated with an elite sale and with extremely strong trade the sale topped at 10,000gns for Sterndale Explode Ashlyn, an 11-month old Wabash-Way Explode daughter of the award-winning Sterndale Gold Ashlyn EX91 who later sold for 6,900gns. Explode Ashlyn is backed by four Excellent dams, with her third dam being the great Tri- Day Ashlyn.

44 head averaged £4,035 and there was a total clearance of bulls selling to 4,000gns for Sterndale Galahad, a Braxton son out of the Sterndale CB Allen Ghost Ex94(2E). 27 embryos averaged £605.89 with the top lot being a package of four by a mutually agreeable sire out of this year’s UK Dairy Expo Champion Peak Goldwyn Rhapsody EX95(2E) which made 900gns each.

It was a superb day and a tremendous credit to all involved.
