Day 2: Moorshard, Genetic Elite preview & Gala Dinner 12.30pm on Wednesday saw the visit to the renowned Moorshard herd – home to upcoming president, Randolph Miller. First established in the 1950s, it was not until the 70s that serious

efforts were made in order to improve the herd. By the late 80s, the Millers had introduced new families, started showing their animals and entering herds competitions. 1996 saw Mike Miller and family move to form the well known Shanael herd and now Moorshard is run by a three generation partnership of Randolph, Randolph’s mother and Randolph’s son, Brian.

Approximately 200 cows are milked with yields averaging over 10,000 litres. These figures have been this high for several years on twice a day milking. Rations are formulated by and feed is purchased through Mole Valley Farmers. Cows graze in the summer and the majority are winter housed in sand cubicles.

Showing and herd competitions have been an important part of the promotion over the last 30 years. The herd has won the South West herd competition for the last nine years entered and has won 12 times in total, as well as being placed third in the national final.

Showing is now more selective than previously at Moorshard; with three shows attended in 2013 they won the championship at the South West Dairy Show, Devon County and reserve
