LANCASHIRE

On Sunday 27 April, 32 members of the Club set off for the annual three day Spring Tour, this year to the South East of Scotland. We arrived at our base, the Houston House Hotel, Uphall, near Edinburgh in the late afternoon. On Monday we went to see the Parkend, Lesmay and PinUpGirl herds of the Weatherup family. On arrival they very kindly provided us with a super lunch, before viewing the herd and buildings at Parkend Farm. We saw some great cows in the 200 cow milking herd, including the superb Parkend Sanchez Tamara VG89-2yr. Many of the group were interested in the green bedding being used, which is a recent development in cattle bedding. On Tuesday we had a guide meet us at our hotel for a Coach Tour of Edinburgh. This gave a wonderful insight into the history of the city. We then set off to see the Blythbridge herd of the Laird family. Here we saw a fantastic herd of 500 head, which is milked three times a day, with plenty of wonderful individuals, too numerous to mention. The calf rearing facilities, with automated feeders, were of particular interest. Again superb hospitality was offered to us with afternoon tea on the lawn. On this Tuesday evening we had a Gala Dinner at our hotel, where we were able to entertain our host families. Wednesday saw us heading south to visit the Queenscairn herd of Robert and Andrina Shanks. We viewed the 180 head herd and saw some super members of the Kimo and Faith families. It was interesting to hear Robert’s views on various aspects of farming before all too soon we were getting back onto the coach.

In conclusion, a great trip to superbly run farms, all with something different to offer for discussion. Our thanks go to them all for allowing us to visit, and for the hospitality shown to us.

MIDLAND

Midland members enjoyed a day trip to Shropshire in May to visit Mick and Kath Gould’s Woodmarsh herd and viewed outstanding cows including the Melody, Zandra and Lime families. Congratulations to HYB member Sarah Sutton who came third in the senior stockjudging and fourth in the senior linear at the HYB Competitions Day at Aintree Holsteins in May.

The Club travelled to the Po valley region of Italy in June, where we visited the herds of Go-Farm, Sabbiona, Al-Be-Ro and Idevera and enjoyed temperatures of 35 degrees and plenty of local food and wine. We also watched Parmesan cheese being produced, we went to Modena – the home of Ferrari – and stayed in the historic town of Cremona. Thanks to Pete Ridler (Semenzoo) and David Sayce (WWS) for arranging such a fantastic trip.

Stockjudging Results We are very lucky here in the Lancashire Club as we seem to have a never ending supply of quality Holstein cattle with enthusiastic owners who are able to host our three stock judging competitions. This year was no exception as our hosts were the Garth family – Bowland View Holsteins, the Inman family – Witherslack Holsteins and the Hall family of the Airebank herd of Holsteins. To them all we extend our grateful thanks.

A sincere thank you goes to our fi rst ever lady Master Judge, Mrs Helen Herd.
