CLUBS ONLINE

SOUTH WALES The Club’s AGM was held in April and two valuable officials retired after dedicating over 30 years of service between them. Mr & Mrs Edward Perkins stood down as Treasurer and Secretary and as a token of appreciation, Mrs Miranda Bowen presented them with an original painting on behalf of the Club. Thank you both for all your hard work. The following members were elected as the new officials: President – Mr Robert Maskell (Cwmgest) Chairman – Mr Nev Roberts (Dulais), Vice Chairman – Mr Richard Thomas (Churchvale), Secretary – Mr Huw Evans, Treasurer – Miss Nicola Evans (Nicel). Good luck to you all in your new roles! Club Show and Sale – 30 heifers forward in this month’s Club sale sold for an average of £2,072. Judged by Geraint Thomas

(Gwynnog Holsteins), the Deri herd continued their run of topping the awards with both the Champion and Reserve Champion. Deri Mono Shottle Puck (pictured) was Champion and later sold for £3,400 to the judge. The Reserve Champion was Deri Goldstar Trui and went to Mr Bevan, Pendine for £2,750. Competition for the Deri consignment was strong and Mr Bevan took home a further two heifers with Deri Goldstar Silvia at £2,650 and Deri Dazzle 54 at £2,750. Three also went to Lloyd Thomas’s Plas herd, the pick of them being Deri Betty 8 sired by Woodmarsh Topshot at £2,900. Others to cross two thousand were the Cathen herd with a heifer at £2,120, a Rhydonwil heifer made £2,100 and a Troedrhiw heifer consigned by R Lewis, Fronun also sold for £2,000. Two very successful nights of stockjudging were held at the Carwyn herd with Messrs Griffiths Penlan and also with Rob and Miranda Bowen at the Lan herd. There was a very good turnout to both nights with great cattle seen. Thank you to all who helped organise these evenings and to the both families for having us!

A team of six HYB members travelled down to Aintree Holsteins this year to compete at the national HYB competitions day with our Senior Linear Team (Jess Hurren and Robert Crozier) bringing home third place. The HYB members said they thoroughly enjoyed their day and commented on the high standard of cattle they had to judge.

HYB member picked for UK Team In June it was announced that HYB member Lizzie Miles

(Littlebridge) had been selected to be part of the UK’s 2014 team that will travel to Battice, Belgium in early September. Lizzie, along with six other HYB members from across the country, will compete at the European Young Breeders School in various competitions such as stock judging, clipping, washing and showmanship. The Club would like to wish her the best of luck for the competition ahead!

100 THE JOURNAL AUGUST 2014

SUFFOLK Suffolk Holstein Club continues to grow in members and support and in recent weeks have enjoyed several events to bring everyone together. After the Club AGM at the start of the year, Club Chairman, Gerald Godfrey, organised a very popular and successful quiz night at Flixton Buck where over 100 members and friends tested their grey matter with a fun quiz; rumour has it that members are already swotting up in preparation for the next one!

On 27 March, the Club hosted their annual dinner and prize-giving evening at the Waveney House Hotel in Beccles. As always, members, friends and invited guests enjoyed an excellent meal and brilliant company. Trophies were awarded to the winners of the herd competition held in the summer of 2013 – well done to everyone who collected silverware. We are indebted to all of the supporters of the Club who enthusiastically support our dinner each year, so much so that we always have a full house.

HYB members have also been keeping busy with a training day kindly hosted by the Vale family at Oaklands Farm, Aldeby where members, young and old, learnt new skills (and refreshed old skills!) in washing, clipping and handling. The day was a great success and really helped to get our HYB members in ‘the zone’ ahead of the show season. Thank you to everyone who helped out on the day – it really is much appreciated. The Suffolk Show saw an excellent display of the best Holsteins that our area has to offer; huge congratulations must go to John Cawston for scooping the Holstein Championship and Interbreed with Poringland Ruby 7. Reserve Interbreed went to the Wigboro herd with Acton CBC Punch, whilst in the Jersey classes, champion went to HYB member Andrea Vale with Saxown Fantom Heidi 13. It is fairly clear to see that Suffolk Holstein Club have had a busy year so far and it is far from over! Plans are currently taking shape for a Club visit to Ireland in December and there are still places available. We are always keen to welcome new members into the Club to attend our events, so for more information please contact Club Chairman, Gerald Godfrey on 07880 556714. (Full news online)
