SAFETY IN NUMBERS E
ABOVE: Product demonstrations at IFSEC
IFSEC International, the largest security event to cater for a whole range of product areas across the security buying chain, takes place from 17–19 June at ExCeL London
ducational institutions are often automatically deemed to be a safe and secure environment for students and staff. Establishments with
a strong reputation for being a safe place to learn will always be far more desirable than schools and universities that are known for violence, theft and general disturbance. A negative reputation can prevent future students
applying to atend and ultimately cause the institution to close. It’s important that schools, colleges and universities recognise the challenges that they face and implement the best systems to combat them. With budgets tight on where enforcement can be
implemented, educational establishments need to be aware of what solutions are available and how they can overcome a host of challenges, ranging from theft and vandalism to disruptive pupils assaulting teachers. Security systems can be installed that monitor their behaviour, without this it could lead to potential prosecution as well as protecting the premises of the property itself. IFSEC International is the largest security event that
caters for a whole range of product areas across the security buying chain. Taking place from 17–19 June at ExCeL London, visitors are able to easily identify the latest solutions available in access control, integrated security solutions, intelligent buildings, intruder alarms, IT and cyber security, perimeter protection, physical security, safe cities and video surveillance. Visitors will have access to a whole host of education
onsite and will be able to listen to industry leaders discuss the holistic approaches that should be taken with security, fire, IT, data management and business solutions. With seven education theatres located on the show floor, IFSEC International will be able to provide support and advice on what best practice to implement when back at school, college or university.
The IFSEC
Global.com Centre Stage Theatre will see
Peter Houlis, Managing Director, 2020 Vision Systems, present the session ‘Security Convergence in the Education Sector’. Identifying the specific challenges educational establishments face from a security perspective, Houlis will discuss how incidents often revolve around the inappropriate behaviour of pupils; bullying, pety theft and vandalism. By night (and during the long holidays), the threats can be more serious, extending to arson, theft and criminal damage. Houlis will examine the benefits of converged solutions and how this can be overcome. When educational facilities are left empty in the
vacation periods it’s essential that the expensive equipment within them don’t become victim to theft or vandalism. Discussing ‘Vacant Property Protection: a voluntary Code of Practice’ on the IFSEC Global. com Centre Stage, Simon Alderson, Chairman, Vacant Property Working Group, BSIA and Development Director, VPS and Clive Thomas, Regional Managing Director (London and the South East), Sitex Orbis, will speak about the essential property practices to be aware of that cover risk management and health and safety procedures, the maintenance of already- installed protection and security measures, and how to respond to any security breaches. Registering to atend IFSEC International will
provide visitors with access to the five additional shows running alongside it. Together all shows make up Protection & Management 2014 and serve as a one-stop shop for atendees who are responsible for keeping buildings, and the people within them, safe and secure. Protection & Management 2014 is made up of IFSEC
International, FIREX International, Facilities Show, Safety & Health Expo, Energy & Environment Expo and Service Management Expo. ET
