Powering on to success N
ow firmly established among the top battery suppliers in the UK, PowerCell is consolidating its position through a national expansion programme which is further strength- ening its sales and service capability throughout Lancashire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, the North East and Scotland. With average growth run- ning at 24% per annum, managing director Derek Anderson is in no doubt about the reasons for the com- pany’s remarkable success: “It’s all about customer focus. Whether we are working in partner- ship with manufacturers or dealers or directly with end users, our mission is to specify the best combination of bat- tery and charger, to deliver a solution that reduces energy costs, delivers optimum shift length and maximises the operating life of the battery.
Best combination
“The significance of the best battery- charger combination is often neglected at the point of sale in a bid to minimise the initial purchase price of fork lift trucks. However getting it right guar- antees significantly lower whole life costs and greater customer satisfac- tion. It’s no coincidence that our suc- cess is built on an exceptional level of repeat business and endorsements from customers and partners.” In order to get closer to customers throughout the UK, PowerCell has announced the appointment of two new sales engineers and acquired a 50% stake in Sheffield-based Motive Power Services (MPS). “We’ve been working with MPS for the past few years,” explains Anderson. “They’ve been in business for more than 20 years and have a team of highly experienced engineers. “They’re a successful and estab- lished firm and share a similar ethos to ourselves: putting the customer first by delivering the most appropriate, cost effective solutions and truly excellent after-sales service. We con- tinue to grow because we do exactly what we say we will.
“In addition we invest in our people, our equipment and our cus- tomer service support systems to ensure we provide the level of support that our customers need to remain competitive and in complete control of their costs.”

West, South Wales and the Midlands will be area sales manager Nik Bridger, who has considerable experience in the forklift truck industry. Neal Thorp brings a vast knowledge of industrial batteries to customers in the North East. Both relish the chance to take PowerCell forward into new regions and new markets as the company continues its recession-breaking growth story.
Achieving best outcome “We pride ourselves on ascertaining the exact requirements of each appli- cation including what workloads will be placed on each piece of equipment, what charging schedules are antici- pated and what service support will be required - and delivering precisely the right specification,” continues Anderson. “Our aim is to help our clients achieve the best outcome, not just on the initial purchase price but across the entire investment. “We often mix and match suppliers in order to achieve the optimum com- bination. It’s all about energy effi- ciency and how effectively power is

converted from AC to DC. Similarly, people often don’t realise the impor- tance of how a battery is charged and maintained. It’s about putting more power into the battery, more effi- ciently. Moreover, we are unique in offering a fully traceable history on every battery we sell.
“It gives the customer the informa- tion required to assess how equipment is performing and in the case of an older battery, whether its life can be economically extended by, for exam- ple, replacing two or three cells. You’d be surprised how many batteries are scrapped – at considerable expense – long before their working life is truly over. We can save the customer money by working the battery to the absolute limit of its life. After all, it’s the heart of the machine and the single most expensive component.
