NSK improves loading bay safety at


NSK, one of the worlds leading manufacturers of


industrial and automotive components, has chosen Castells drive-away prevention system Salvo to protect staff at its warehouse in Tilburg, Netherlands. NSKs huge facility distributes more than 4,000 pallets a month across the whole of Europe and North Africa. Customers include Ford, Volkswagen, Siemens and Bosch. Salvo has been installed on 12 loading bays, while NSK has also bought four Salvo Club steering wheel locks to safeguard deliveries made by rigid vehicles. There have been no reported health and safety incidents since Salvo was commissioned at the Tilburg site. Having reversed their vehicle onto the relevant loading bay, drivers install the Salvo SGL lock on the exposed emergency airline coupling,


releasing a


trapped key. This key is then inserted and turned in the Salvo Control Panel (SCP+)on the outside of the bay. An amber beacon illuminates on the inside to indicate that the loading bay is now safe and ready to use. The loader opens the door, trapping the key in the SCP+ outside. While the door remains raised and the key trapped in the control panel, the trailer cannot be moved.

he latest DTE102 Ethernet RFID controller from ifm electronic and the associated antennae complement a long list of radio-frequency identification devices from this leading automation equipment manufacturer. ifm electronic now supplies RFID in a variety of guises for different installations and purposes. If a simple work piece carrier is needed, there is nothing easier to use than the AS-interface-based DTA system. This consists of nothing more than read or read/write heads with a built-in AS-i chip, so they can easily be added to an existing AS-interface, or an RFID set-up can be created using the simple AS-interface two-core cable and master / gateway, which itself is stand-alone or links seamlessly into a higher level bus. For more complex systems handling greater amounts of data over longer distances and with the ability to read multiple tags, ifm electronic offers the DTE800/900 system. This UHF system is offered in two variants to comply with frequency allocations in the European and North American markets. Now the latest RFID product from ifm, the DTE102, can accept antennae working in the 125 kHz or 13.56 MHz ranges. These antennae, such as the ANT410, or ANT512 are designed in the same package as ifm’s renowned inductive sensors, so are ideally suited to harsh industrial usage.

This is equipped with IO-Link, the latest technology for low-level communication with devices in the field. IO-Link takes the bus the ‘last metre’ where previously the field node was the last stop on the bus. The number of devices with IO-Link built in is increasing rapidly, and so is their take-up, as users realise the advantages of the transparency, ease of configuration and flexibility offered by the technology. IO-Link transmits not only digital, but also analogue signals from an IO-Link device directly as values, greatly reducing conversion losses from the original measured value to 4 to 20 mA and back again.

Spirax Sarco delivers total steam solution for pioneering carbon capture project


pirax Sarco has delivered a comprehensive steam- driven heat exchange solution for a ground- breaking carbon capture project at Ferrybridge coal- fired power station in Yorkshire. The Spirax Sarco system is a key element in the success of this cutting-edge project to develop large-scale technology to mitigate the environmental damage from burning fossil fuels. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology aims to capture carbon dioxide from the flue gas of major emitters such as power stations and store it out of harm’s way, possibly by burying it in exhausted oil and gas reservoirs or saline aquifers. The Ferrybridge project demonstrates the “capture” part of the process at a much larger scale than previous pilot schemes, using an amine-based solvent to absorb up to 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day.
