About Travel Perspective

Travel Perspective is a social and digital consultancy run by Steve Keenan and Mark Frary (above). Keenan and Frary previously worked for The Times and Sunday Timesin travel. They launched Travel Perspective to help travel companies with their social and digital marketing strategies. This is the third year that the pair have collaborated with WTM and have curated content for three days, compared with two last year. They have secured speakers from the likes of Facebook, Google and TripAdvisor, as well as what they call the “cream of digital travel”. n travelperspective.co.uk

travel technology stream has its own event within WTM and it seemed a logical step to include something interesting for travel technology start-ups, one of the most innovative and dynamic parts of the travel industry. The pace of innovation has changed rapidly in recent years, largely because of the internet. Web technology has made start-ups easy to establish,

Keeping it fresh T

Mark Frary, of social media and digital consultancy Travel Perspective, is set to chair the WTM Fresh competition session today. Here he explains how the idea came about as the panel looks for ‘the next Twitter’

he idea for WTM Fresh arose during the early planning meetings for this year’s Travel Tech Show at WTM. This year the

market and scale to serve millions of people around the world, even while retaining a small team. You just have to look at Twitter to see this. It had eight employees in 2008, 29 in 2009, 130 in 2010, 350 in 2011 and 900 in 2012. But by the time it had 900 employees, it had 140 million users. Twitter’s recent Initial Public Offering is

the dream of every technology start-up – the payday for the founders to compensate for the lack of sleep and family life and payback time for those venture capitalists and angel investors who chipped in and who believed in the founders’ business concept.

Pitch to win Today’s competition will see six travel technology companies (less than a year old) compete for a £5,000 prize, courtesy of sponsor Sabre Travel Network, and mentoring from members of the panel. The winning pitch will also have access to a range of travel APIs through our technology partners. We are lucky to have pulled

together a very experienced panel of judges for this. What this panel, chaired by myself, will be looking for is a start-up that solves an

existing problem; has a viable business model; and a team that has the skills and vision to make it reality. They are also looking for innovative ideas that have not been tried a thousand times. We have chosen to focus in this first year on trip inspiration and travel planning, as we believe this is an area that has not yet been cracked. Yes, there are companies doing it but we don’t believe anyone has yet created the perfect solution and found a way to

marry inspiration with the journey towards booking. The panel will not

take prisoners. They have seen enough start- ups to know what is a pipe-dream and what could be the next big thing. Teams will have just five minutes to impress, based on the idea that any business should be able to communicate the essence of what they do to potential investors and customers in the time it takes to travel between the floors of a building. If successful, the

start-up that wins the WTM Fresh competition could very well become the next Twitter.
