profitable; be widely bought and sold and be promoted in specialised exhibitions, was an emerging concept. Consequently, EMTG held an enormous amount of events – with the assistance of Chamber of Commerce and Industry – explaining the franchise model to its audience.
The first exhibition attracted a relatively modest 20 exhibitors. Today, however, more than 620 concepts are in operation in the country, and one-third of these participate in BUYBRAND exhibitions. The exhibition
has become the central annual event in the franchising community, not only in Russia, but also in the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Baltic States and Eastern Europe.
Current trends: Food service industry The quick-service restaurant industry is the fastest-growing sector of Russian franchising, followed by clothing retail and then services (source: EMTG Analytic, 2011 & 2012). Fast food has been booming over the last few
years, and the financial crisis has had only minimal impact. According to preliminary data from wealth management company, Finam, the Russian market for the industry exceeded 1 trillion roubles (over £19billion) in 2012. In the next four-five years, an increase of 12-13 per cent annually is anticipated and, by 2017, the fast- food industry should earn close to 2 trillion roubles (over £38billion).
For many global players, the Russian market is becoming as much a priority as the Chinese
