However, if meetings aren’t your thing there are many other things you can do to network on a more personal, one-to-one level:

• Contact local and related businesses e.g. independent ladies fashion shops, hairdressers, bridal boutiques, florists etc. and see if you can exchange information with them so as they can recommend you to their customers and you recommend them to your customers.

• Liaise with local hairdressers to create hair and beauty packages aimed at brides, mother of the bride / groom, proms etc.

• Join the local Chamber of Commerce – most towns have them and they work very well as a way of introducing you to all of the other local business owners. Not only are they potential customers but they will be happy to tell their customers about you as all independent business owners are even more keen than ever to keep everything local.

• Build a relationship with local Hotels and B&Bs to arrange for your literature to be included in each of their guest rooms to promote your services whilst they are staying in the area.

• Contact local wedding venues and ask for your literature to be included in their wedding packs, or perhaps for your details to be added to their preferred supplier list. Most wedding venues will be more than happy to do this (assuming they don’t already recommend someone in your field) as it creates a complete package and service for their customer.

• Send price lists to local large employers such as the local council, insurance companies etc. and offer their staff a corporate discount if they come and visit you.Although you are offering a small discount you are gaining free advertising and recommendation to a large audience.

• Contact the localWomen’s Institute groups and offer to do a talk or demonstration at one of their meetings. Take plenty of price lists with you and perhaps even offer a discount if any of them make a booking that night.

• Build a relationship with local slimming groups – these are a great source as you are targeting women who are working hard to lose weight and are keen to take more care of themselves, and perhaps reward their hard work and weight loss.Again you could offer a discount, and maybe even go to one of the meetings and talk about body care, skin toning etc. and how treatments and a body care regime will help.

• Social Networking – of course this has probably been the biggest boom in networking and advertising in recent years. The use of both Facebook and Twitter are so easy and instant, and are great for reaching your customers. Additionally, they are also a great way of networking with other local and related businesses and business owners. For example, you could create joint competitions i.e. you and a local photographer could offer a free make over and photo shoot to a lucky winner. You could also advertise your business on other local business’ Facebook walls – and likewise they can do the same with you. You could retweet each other on Twitter to increase your audience and who your message is getting to.

Most of these ideas will not cost you the earth in monetary terms, but they will need your enthusiasm, time and effort – provide these and put these ideas into practice and you will most definitely be onto a winner!
