in conversation with under the skin

This month Guild News chats to Candice Gardner, Education Curriculum Manager at The International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, to uncover her life’s loves and passions.

I ended up in the beauty industry because… I suffered with Acne in my mid-teens. My grandmother took me to a local skin care centre and although I was mortified as I was so embarrassed about my skin, the skin therapist was fantastic. I wanted to help others with their skin, so it was the start of my passion for skin biology and getting results and changes with treatments, ingredients and technology.

If I wasn’t in the beauty industry I would… Have been a pharmacist or chemist. I am a confirmed science junky!

The best thing about my job is… Being able to spend time indulging my passion for skin science by reviewing current research.

An average day for me is… Are you kidding? What’s average? I have a seven and a four year old so there is no such thing as average. Every day is an adventure!

My ideal weekend would be… Relaxed entertaining at home.

My favourite book is… Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

My favourite film is… Oooh, that is tricky. Shadowlands with Anthony Hopkins and directed by Richard Attenborough is high up the list.

“I wanted to help others with their skin, so it was the start of my passion for skin biology… ”

The most famous person I have met is… No idea. I’m not a very star struck individual I’m afraid! My parents are in the entertainment industry so I’ve met a few relatively famous people.

My favourite part of the world is… The Drakensberg in South Africa – breath-taking scenery, brilliant hiking, and African sunsets.

I could not live without… My two sisters. We’ve had a special bond since we were little.

My favourite professional treatment is… A really good deep tissue massage.

When growing up my role model was… My grandfather. He was insightful, full of adventure and passionate about life and learning.

I would like to be remembered as… Someone who gave unconditionally whenever and wherever she could.
