Changing Your Stripes

After years celebrating on a Broadway stage, the Woodruff Foundation asked Encore Décor to transform the atrium of the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C., into an appropriate backdrop for Stand Up For Heroes, the organization’s all-star fund- raiser supporting wounded warriors. Here’s how Hilary Howes, Encore’s design director, did it:

“As with any brand, their logo — red, white, and blue, with a star and waving stripes — had to be the starting point. I deconstructed the logo by centering it as a dimensional sign on a blue backdrop, then repeating the waving stripes in translucent dimen- sional shapes rhythmically across the backdrop. Not wanting to upstage the pre- senters, who ranged from Admiral [Michael] Mullen to Jon Stewart to the Grammy- winning rock group Train, I spotlighted them by framing the stage with much larger red structural waves and a raw lighting truss on the top, thus creating a space that could be transformed by light color and pattern throughout the evening.”
