Singapore’s tourism industry is vital to its economy, attracting 13,171,303 tourists in 2011 – over twice of the country’s total population. The total visitor days were 44.9 million, an average of 3.86 days per visitor, with over 53% of visitors coming from (in descending order) Indonesia, China, Malaysia, Australia and India. Singapore consists of 20-30 landmarks, including Fort Siloso, the Tiger Sky Tower and the Sentosa Luge. There are also two integrated resorts which house casinos - Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa. The Orchard Road district is commonly considered the centre of tourism, which comprises of multi-story shopping centres and hotels. Singapore also hosts a number of events each year, including the Singapore Food Festival, Singapore Grand Prix, Singapore Arts Festival, Chingay Parade, World Gourmet Summit and the Singapore Sun Festival.

VISAS


Foreigners holding ordinary passports issued by the countries grouped ‘Assessment Level 1’ and ‘Assessment Level 2’ will require a visa to enter Singapore (for a full list on the countries in each group, visit: www.ica.gov.sg).


Entry Visa - Business


Those looking to travel to Singapore for business negotiations/discussions can apply for a business entry visa. They must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date of entry into Singapore, and must submit a Letter of Introduction (LOI) by a local contact – in this case, a representative of a Singapore registered business entity. If the applicant is unable to furnish a LOI from a local contact, they can approach their Embassy to issue a LOI to support their visa application.


Entry Visa - Social A person wishing to travel to Singapore to


see friends, relatives or for tourism can apply for a social-based entry visa. For the Letter of Introduction (LOI), the contact can be any Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident who is at least 21 years old. Social visitors, or those seeking medical treatment, who require a longer period of stay beyond the entry visa, may submit an application for extension of stay (not more than 89 days from the date of entry). They must acquire a local sponsor and may not return to Singapore within fi ve days of their departure date.


Student’s Pass If a person has been accepted by an educational institution to study full-time in Singapore, then they must apply for a Student’s Pass. Depending on the type of educational institution that a foreigner is intending to study at, the requirements and procedures for applying for a Student’s Pass will differ.


They are also exempt from a pass if they are: a Dependent’s Pass holder; an Immigration Exemption Order holder or a visitor who has been granted a short term visit pass and wishes to attend a short course within the validity of the pass.


Long-term visit pass Foreigners seeking a longer stay in Singapore may apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP). Visitors can apply if: their spouse, parent (if they are under 21) or child (who is above the age of 21) is a Singapore Citizen (CS) or Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR); they are students of the Institute of Higher Learning and seeking employment in Singapore; they are a female visitor whose child/grandchild is studying in Singapore on a Student’s Pass or they are seeking permission to deliver a child in Singapore. The applicant must be sponsored by those whom they wish to visit.
