ELECTROREVIEWS DPPLGNGRS
Invaders Hottwerk 9.0
Late last year, DPPLGNGRS’ debut album ‘Black Market Heart Surgery’ consolidated a string of great singles and won acclaim across the dance music board. Here, ‘Invaders’ gets a second single outing to remind everyone why they are being mentioned in the same breath as The Chems and SMD. A mutant Detroit feel creeps into their own ‘909 Dub Version’ re-rub and a storming proto-metal/ techno-electro remix from IDC rounds off an essential package.
Embryonik
Nightflight EP Binalog Productions 9.0
Boys Noize
XTC & Ich R U Remixes BNR
9.0
BNR is an unashamedly favourite label on this page and their quality of output is so consistently high that a month rarely goes by without a mention. Now here is the 100th release on BNR and of course it’s a big double A-side deal. The Chemical Brothers and Justice turn in one remix each of two of the best tracks on Alex Ridha’s third album. Get the vinyl and grab yourself a piece of history.
Chicken Lips
All That You Do Southern Fried Records 7.0
Andy Meecham and Dean Meredith have twenty years of collaboration under their belts, from their chart- topping days with Bizarre Inc in the ‘90s and subsequent Chicken Lips releases. Here they are again on Southern Fried, and it’s the remixes that push the soulful but slightly syrupy original onto this page. Joe Goddard brings his 2 Bears and Hot Chip experience to task and creates a sparse electro disco house fusion that works best in the included dub version.
D/R/U/G/S
Elevate EP Bad Life 7.0
Cal Wright has released as D/R/U/ G/S on Moshi Moshi and Different Recordings and now Bad Life have snapped him up for a three-tracker. The appeal doesn’t lie in the

vocal-led title track but with the seven-minute ‘Tyrannosaur’ which bleeps and blips as it motors along on the back of an hypnotically simple groove. It’s probably the most focused track he’s done so far — fully expect to hear it all over the place.
Dave Clarke
Wisdom To The Wise BNR 7.0
Dave Clarke’s ‘Red’ trilogy is considered to be a milestone in the history of techno, so maybe it shouldn’t be a surprise to have a new set of versions out on the BNR label. Alex Ridha’s own take is respectful yet innovative, Marcel Dettman’s is deeper, and Steve Rachmad delivers two urgent and insistent versions. At Mr Clarke’s own request, A. Mochi comes up with a new edit remaining close to the original version.
Douster & Savage Skulls TRT
Dim Mak Records 7.0
Hugo Douster teams up with my current favourite Swedes, Savage Skulls, to launch a three-man assault on a dancefloor near you. A mad mix-up of garagey beats and housey ravey piano stabs, they are avowedly going for a montage of old skool flavours. It really works, even though it probably shouldn’t. Hugo describes it as “one word: FUN!” and that’s pretty much as astute a review as you’ll get.
Greece has been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately, so when the country’s top electronic producer Embryonik releases a new EP it’s a good shift of focus. Nightflight is a ‘concept EP’ and perhaps shouldn’t be listened to on an actual plane, much as Denzel Washington’s latest film should never be an inflight movie. ‘Gliding’ is all gorgeous lush synths, ‘Vertigo’ gives a darker hint that all is not well, and final track ‘Heaven’ tells you where the narrative ends up!
Joyce Muniz
Trust Your Enemies Exploited 7.0
The consistently good output from Berlin label Exploited is mostly too housey for this page, but every now and again a looser, groovier release lets me give label boss Shir Kahn his dues. Joyce Muniz mixes up a range of influences, with Brazilian percussion as likely to be at the fore as dark electro housey melodies, as is found on this track apparently inspired by her grandmother’s advice to “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”.
Lefrenk
Insula PFL 7
Spanish producer Lefrenk follows the likes of John Digweed, Agoria and Slam by releasing on PFL with this sampler EP for his new album. Title track ‘Insula’ is a moody synthy throb that just stays the right side of being too passively pad-like, whereas ‘Almathea’ gives a polyrhythmic kick to an almost poppy underground groove. ‘Caramel’ has a late night/early morning vibe, and ‘Orion’ a kind of understated menace. It all makes for a nice selection.
Drums Of Death This Night (Waves
City Dub) Civil Music 6.0
A ‘waves of euphoria’ old skool-style housey affair, this isn’t what fans of Colin Bailey’s Drums Of Death output may expect, but that’s probably the point.
Felix Da Housecat Sinner Winner/Give
Me Body No Shame/Rude Photo 6.0
Accomplished as you would expect, but these two tracks sound far too mainstream to really excite or hint at a return to former triumphs.

I Wanna Do GND Records 7.0
Anything that gives me a little shiver that says ‘Westbam’ is alright in my book, and this debut on GND does exactly that.
Sister Bliss
Ain’t There Junkdog 6.0
The first solo single for ten years also appears on her own brand new label. A light and breezy tune that will sound better as it gets warmer and sunnier.
