THEREdefinitely seems to be something in Red Bull, besides the caffeine, taurine and sugar, of course. Less a ubiquitous energy drink, more one of the driving forces behind modern electronic music and the celebration of its heritage, the 15th edition of the Red Bull Academy arrives in New York for a whirlwind of talks, screenings, parties and workshops that extend through until the closing party on May 31 (at brand new Brooklyn hangout Output), when the past and present of New York and it’s surrounds is celebrated via the likes of L.I.E.S – featuring Euro ally Legowelt – and house/garage maestro Kerri Chandler. Highlights along the way are too numerous to mention properly here, so make sure you check online, but include a huge array of talent, from West Coast beat-makers to the cream of the UK bass scene, with plenty of hipster house, leftfield electronics and straight up techno along the way. Catch the screening of a bunch of rare documentaries on April 29 at Sunshine Cinema, when Africa Bambaataa is amongst those on the panel (then see him playing alongside fellow electro legend Egyptian Lover at Santos Party House on May 23), or hear a rare DJ set from Erykah Badu under her DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown moniker at The Music Hall of Williamsburg on April 30. Alternatively, wait until May and you can catch the likes of Four Tet (May 8), 12 Years Of DFA Records (May 25) or Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry vs. Adrian Sherwood (May 30). Our pulse is already starting to quicken, and we haven’t even had a Red Bull…

FRIDAY-SUNDAY APRIL 12-14 & 19-21 PHOENIX, THE XX, HOT CHIP, WOLFGANG GARTNER, NICKY ROMERO, SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO, ERIC PRYDZ, JAMES BLAKE, FEDDE LE GRAND, RICHIE HAWTIN, BAAUER, MAYA JANE COLES, JORIS VOORN, THE 2 BEARS, MAJOR LAZER

SETover two consecutive weekends, The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (to give it its full handle) continues to expand its horizons to reflect the ever-changing background of the US scene. Up top there are plenty of bands heavily influenced by electronic music – from Paris’ ever-excellent Phoenix to the darker, moodier sound the UK’s The XX – alongside big indie tickets such as the reformed Blur and Stone Roses, or Cali rockers Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Dig deeper though and there are plenty more names explicitly aimed at the dancefloor. From EDM big guns like Wolfgang Gartner and Eric Prydz (who clearly seems to have conquered his fear of flying), to the edgy techno of Simian Mobile Disco or Detroit legend Richie Hawtin, or the good times party vibes of The 2 Bear (featuring Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard) or Diplo’s energetic Major Lazer, there’s plenty of talent to get you stomping the desert dust.
