GUABA BEACH BAR LIMASSOL, CYPRUS CAPACITY: 2500
GUABABEACHBAR.COM

ORIGINALLY set up as a beach bar with room for 200 in 2006, it took only a year until Guaba was attempting to accommodate 2000 or so crazy ravers. By 2008, problems from the local authorities forced a move to a larger — also beachside — alternative along the Limassol Sea Road. Running from May to September, still today there’s no reason to tar Guaba with the same brush you might be tempted to use for its neighbouring venues, its concern with established international DJs winning the attention of the more serious heads kicking aroundAyia Napa. Fedde Le Grand played under candle-light during a power cut last summer, while Porter Robinson, Nervo and Gareth Emery also took to its custom-built beefcake of a soundsystem. Known for its more adventurous approach to production, expect anything from CO2 bazookas and pyrotechnic flares to theatre dance performances while getting funky at Guaba Beach Bar.

ON the cliff-top of an island more prone to cash-rich holidaymakers with superyachts than the types you catch at Fabric on a Friday night, lives one of the great anomalies of clubland. Cavo Paradiso — pitched above Paradise Beach — is a poolside venue encapsulating all the charm, all the warm-hearted gusto, you’d expect from a quaint Greek island, except with a top-notch soundtrack. Decorated stylishly with terracotta tiles, white-wash walls, even a few cast-iron gargoyles, it has a look and feel closer to a classy Grecian villa than a superclub — that is, until it sets off the custom-built JBL Dance 5/3 soundsystem and CO2/confetti cannons. Most concerned with talent likely to pull thousands of punters on a fairly remote tourist haven — Tiestö, Angello and Aoki all played last summer — Cavo is also partial to names carrying underground credentials. Hence, it’s equally loved by Ricardo Villalobos and Sven

THE automatic touch-point for anyone visiting the golden sands of Ibiza with a flavour for stripped-back techno and funky deep house, DC10 is still the choice destination for underground favourites Kerri Chandler, Dyed Soundorom and Matthias Tanzmann. Last summer also saw its flagship world-touring promotion Circoloco grow stronger, and Jamie Jones launched his Paradise residency to much acclaim. Once a haunt dominated by tracky minimal, the club’s policy has moved towards funkier affairs in recent years, as ravers flocking to the White Isle caught wind of darker, more disco-informed house. A regular feature at the top-end of this poll since it relaunched after a year-long hiatus in 2010, this ex-hangar on an abandoned airfield in Ibiza continues to trailblaze the path of modern club culture.

OCTAGON SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA CAPACITY: 1000

OFFERING up true Gangnam style from the district made world-famous by Psy’s viral hit, Octagon is just over one-year-old — opening in November 2011 — but has already made a huge impact in the South Korean capital. Another country in the middle of an economic boom, the club’s tech-design and interior reflect this self-confident affluence — as do the aesthetically pleasing crowd — with Funktion One sound, top Pioneer spec across the two rooms, restaurants serving everything from the finest steak to lobster, and even an indoor pool. It’s given Octagon a reputation for being the place to be seen, with Jessica Alba visiting and Steve Aoki and Skrillex dropping by to play after-parties in the main room. Check upstairs’ smaller second room, however, and you’ll find the club’s array of residents — including DJ Mindbender — helping spread the deep house revolution with a sophisticated palette to match anywhere in Europe.

LAS VEGAS, NV, US
MARQUEELASVEGAS.COM
NON MOVER
Asprawling club complex in the heart of North America’s ultimate party city, Marquee is arguably one of the key architects of the Stateside dance music revolution. Split into the Dayclub — a sun-blazed, opulent poolside space open seven days a week during the Spring season — and the Nightclub, with its three different areas (The Boom Box Room, Library and Main Room), open Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays all year round, it’s undoubtedly one of the most impressive venues in the US. Its sound and light impress, too: boasting a Funktion One soundsystem with 32,000-watt subwoofers and a state-of-the-art audio-visual stage set-up designed by Steve Liberman, Marquee looks and sounds spectacular enough to wow the high rollers that have been known to visit the venue. But above all, it’s the A-grade guests that pack in the punters: Kaskade, Above & Beyond, Armin van Buuren, Erick Morillo
