Sinner Winner EP No Shame/Rude Photo 8.0

Electro glitterati, Felix, is back with this pumping, muscular disco flex and probably one of the best productions I’ve heard from him in a while. A rousing intro from an anonymous, bible-belt evangelist gives that disorientating, Green Velvet ‘Preacher Man’-style touch (who makes a perfect remix choice on this EP), building up to

Taken from their third album, ‘Shields’, for Warp, album highlight, ‘Gun Crazy’ gets a thoroughly majestic makeover from Scan-disco hero, Lindstrøm. Taking little from the original material (endearing as the loose, backyard rhythms and blue- eyed soul vocals may be to some of you Balearic/cosmic fans), Hans-Peter summons a vintage, ‘84-style post-disco/ electro-boogie fix that’s simply spectacular. Even if it sounds a little like it’s taken a few too many ideas from The Universal Robot Band’s ‘Barely Breaking Even’, the reversed snares and key changes make for the most heady dancefloor experience. Superb.

a throbbing, Moroder-inspired climax. To accompany this and Green Velvet’s remix, ‘Give Me Body’ takes a cue from the leather bar-disco sound of Bobby O etc. with over-the-top vocal hooks, camp shrieks and utterly infectious melodies.

Gramme

Too High Tummy Touch 9.0

I was very happy to see a new Gramme release in the promos pile this month — the band’s releases on Trevor Jackson’s sadly defunct Output label still remain classics in the oeuvre of post-punk’s late ‘90s revival. I’m happy to announce that the band have retained the energy of their debut, ‘Mine’, and EP debut, ‘Pre Release’; joining the dots between vintage Mark Stewart, ESG, Gang Of Four and the current sound of Factory Floor — helped with a little extra production from the likes of Leo Zero and Filey Selassie.

Hard Ton Food Of Love (DJ Sprinkles

a sleazy, Sound Factory-inspired, proto-house gem — their second for the fantastic Toy Tonics label. Sounding like an early Nu Groove cut, ‘Food Of Love’ explores the darker shade of vintage NYC-style house music — Nick Holder’s classic ‘Erotic Illusions’ springs to mind — taken even deeper by a charming DJ Sprinkles remix. Disco fans hold tight for the covetable, energetic sound of ‘From Club To Club’. Big release.

John Camp

Credit Default Swap HAKT Recordings 7.0

Perky EP for the neo-disco fans, that’s been garnering praise from the likes of Todd Terje, James Murphy and Red Rack’em. A promising sounding release on DFA affiliate, Justin Miller’s HAKT Recordings, has John Camp fulfilling all your Balearic disco fantasies with mid-tempos, shimmering guitar phrases and spectral vocals. Highlights include the Ten City-inspired proto-house cut, ‘All Ya Gotta Do’ and the opiated jazz-funk/cosmic jam ‘Micrhodesia’.

Lace Curtains

Lace Curtain EP DFA

8.0

Lace Curtains are a collective of hip US-based musicians who have contributed to the likes of labels such as Mexican Summer and some lesser-known, cooler- than-cool DIY imprints. Their DFA debut explores a medley of influences such as minimal-synth, coldwave and German Kosmiche that have clearly shaped their sound — the DAF-inspired cuts ‘In This House’ and ‘Gimme Space’ being particular highlights. Great to hear DFA getting back to their roots and releasing exciting music such as this, alongside the likes of Factory Floor.

Mighty Mouse

Love Is Gonna Lift You Up Cheap Thrills 7.0

Tackling the single choice from Bobby Womack’s most recent album, ‘The Bravest Man In The Universe’, Mighty Mouse flip perky, uptempo soul rhythms for a solid disco swing. Their effort may not be as exhilarating as the mesmerizing house fix by Julio Bashmore, but the decidedly Euro-disco sounding versions on offer here will no doubt charm the ear of the more commercially- minded DJ and mainstream radio jocks.
