A new States Strategy for Sport will build on solid grounds T

By DEPUTY PATRICK RYAN States of Jersey Minister for Education, Sport and Culture

here is no doubt that sport is a vital part of a successful community. I am

very proud of the achievements of Jersey teams and individuals who compete at a very high level and enable the Island to ‘punch above our weight’ in terms of sporting prowess. I am equally proud of the high participation rates in sport and physical activity in Jersey and the excellent staff and infrastructure that enable this to happen.

Over a number of years the States has invested in high quality facilities which are complimented by those provided by Trusts, private operators, sports clubs and associations. Most sports are well catered for.

The social and health benefits of sport are generally well recognised and, despite the pressures of public finances, it is supported as much as possible. When, for instance, the Island Games team needed extra help to get to the 2013 games in Bermuda, an extra £100,000 of funding was diverted to help them travel there. This is seen as a valuable event.

In 2015 Jersey will host the Natwest Island Games and we will welcome participants, officials and spectators from 23 other islands from across the world. The States have agreed to underwrite the Games up to £1.8 million. This is a significant commitment and I am confident that it will be an excellent investment and a very successful week in June 2015.

I hope that many islanders get involved in the build-up and that

we can use this as a celebration of sport but also to develop and celebrate cultural opportunities and to inspire a new generation of young people in Jersey. To support the Games, the States has also committed to refurbish the athletics track at the FB Fields and there will be some minor improvements to other venues. However, it is testament to our existing facilities that we can already host a multi games competition with more than 2,500 participants.
