Shedding light on lamps and furniture for many years


Over the last 18 years operating from our premises in Peter Street, we have seen all sorts of different styles of lighting arrive, depart and sometimes re- appear.


Everything from 2 metre tall multicoloured Cactus floor lamps, to traditional crystal, Murano hand blown chandeliers to stainless steel tube lighting “sculptures”, we have displayed a wide variety of lighting from some of the leading lighting manufacturers in Europe.


Recently, we are proud to have been appointed the Swarovski Authorised Lighting Partner for the Channel Islands, which includes the Schonbek brand. We have worked with Schonbek for the past 17 years, but previously the offer was limited. Now, Light & Shade are able to offer the complete range with all of the options available, including different finishes on metal work and options on crystal quality.


Schonbek produce both traditional and contemporary designs utilising a variety of crystal options, the pinnacle of which is Swarovski “Elements”, the premium crystal produced by the Austrian manufacturer. It uses Rock Crystal, a natural, mined semi-precious stone which is individually hand cut and polished.


The Schonbek cast brass crystal ranges are available in a variety of finishes on the metal work, allowing the client the

opportunity to create a bespoke combination, unique to their requirements.


The Trilliane family, another one that we have historically supplied, is still a classic design and dressed in “Elements” is a truly stunning chandelier, perfect for both traditional and contemporary applications.


The Geometrix Selection is a collection of spirals, slices, pyramids, globes, cubes and spheres available in either Swarovski Elements or Spectra crystal and is suitable for contemporary environments, in either clear or coloured crystal.


The Swarovski and Schonbek ranges are an addition to the, already, busy portfolio of suppliers that we work with, and that’s just in the lighting field.


We also continue to work with Ets. Bernard Siguier, a second generation French furniture manufacturer who specialise in paint and wood stain finishes in their range of in-house designed and manufactured solid timber furniture for dining, bedroom and living spaces.


The vast array of colours offered, allow us, and more importantly, the client, the option to create a unique piece of furniture, tailored to their interior. The paint options together with the various wood stains available, enable us to create a one off piece entirely to the clients requirements.


Siguier also offer a range of dining tables with options of different leg designs which, once again, offer the option of tailoring the design to a client’s own piece of furniture.


Returning to lighting, as a result of changes to EU legislation on the energy efficiency of lamps, many people are confused and believe that compact fluorescent or LED lamps are the only options available to replace incandescent lamps that are being phased out. While this may be the case in the long term, currently there are options, mainly based around halogen light sources that have been developed to be more efficient than their predecessors while having the appearance of a normal lamp and remaining compatible with existing dimming controls.


In the future, LED may well be the answer, but for now, it is not a direct replacement for many existing light sources. Claims made by certain suppliers in relation to the comparable light outputs to existing lamps and the cost savings over their lifespan are, very often misleading. One recently published article claimed a saving of £8000 over the life of an LED against the use of a 40 watt candle lamp!!!
