T e Race2Recovery team relies heavily on
sponsorship and donations and it’s their ambition combined with amazing determination and spirit that has attracted the attention of a major sponsor in the form of Land Rover which is supplying Land Rover engines for use in the team’s race vehicles as well as plenty of back-up support. Mark Cameron, Land Rover Brand
Experience Director, Global Marketing, said: “Race2Recovery truly exemplifi es ‘enduring human spirit’ and powerfully symbolises hope for all servicemen, and indeed civilians, recovering from disabilities caused by serious injury. We are proud to support the team’s
eff orts to complete this incredible feat and raise funds for the service charities that helped them in their own recovery and rehabilitation. “Competing in the Dakar Rally will challenge the team to go beyond their life-changing events. T e determination and mental attitude required by the team to take part in the world’s toughest rally raid epitomises the human spirit of adventure, determination and teamwork. Land Rover is pleased to support the rehabilitation of the courageous individuals within the team, and to help them positively impact on a much larger number of their fellow service personnel through the money they are raising.”
In the lead-up to next January’s rally, the team
are competing in a number of off -road rallies around Europe and North America to improve their driving skills, fi tness and endurance levels and gain invaluable experience along the way. But disabilities aside, the team are determined
to complete the race and raise as much money for charity as possible along the way. Capt Harris said: “T e Row2Recovery team
that went across the Atlantic raised £800k – we want to beat that and raise £1m. “We do have injuries to contend with, but
something like motor sport puts us on a level playing ground. We have custom-built vehicles and the excitement of driving at 100mph off - road is second to none.”
T e Dakar Rally Raid covers 9,000kms in 15 days. T e terrain is some of the most arduous on our planet and includes massive sand dunes. T e Dakar Rally was fi rst run in 1978 when drivers raced from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal. Security threats in Mauritania led to the rally’s cancellation in 2008. Since 2009, the race has been run in South America – namely Peru, Argentina and Chile. T e race is open to professional or amateur drivers and includes motorbikes. In 1982, Mark T atcher (son of Margaret T atcher) got lost for six days when they lost touch with the convoy. T ey were discovered unharmed.
