20 Preview Issue theibcdaily Workflow is latest specialist area to feature at the IBC event Enhancing the experience By Andy Stout
Over the years, IBC has developed several specialist areas as enhancements to the overall Exhibition. Carefully themed and featuring the very latest technologies and thinking in their fields, they add significant value to many attendees’ visits to Amsterdam and can often be some of the busiest and most dynamic areas of the IBC showfloor. By IBC2012, it is estimated that there will be over 50m connected devices – TVs, set- top boxes, games consoles etc – in Western Europe alone. The IBC Connected World reflects this, bringing together the application developers, content providers and technology companies involved in the field together under one roof. What’s more it annotates this new technology with a special Demonstration Area and a programme of short presentations and
demonstrations that allows visitors and exhibitors to make
sense of the new developments in context. These sessions also include a series of high-powered Round Table Briefings, each lunchtime, featuring a panel of experts and specialists debating the issues and answering questions from the floor. The IBC Production Village in Hall 11 gives visitors hands on experience with the very latest production technologies. Whether it be in the field of DSLRs, stereo 3D rigs and camcorders, or the latest in the high speed units that have revolutionised sports coverage, the Production Village allows people to pick up and drive the equipment and directly compare one manufacturer’s products with another’s. Centred around a
professional-standard studio set, the Production Village has rapidly become one of the most dynamic areas of the IBC Exhibition, and is often the place where many people get to experience the new technologies shaping their careers for the first time.
Brightest and best
At IBC people can actually witness the end results of camera technology on the IBC Big Screen, which takes full advantage of the 1700-seat auditorium situated in the centre of the RAI. Featuring state-of- the-art projection systems capable of handling 4K and stereoscopic 3D material and presented in Dolby Surround 7.1 audio, the IBC Big Screen hosts the Cinema@IBC Conference sessions and special Exhibitor Session. It is also the venue for the IBC Big Screen Experience, which every year mounts free screenings and exclusive previews of the latest Hollywood blockbusters for all IBC attendees. New for 2012, the Workflow Solutions Village in Hall 9 is dedicated to the examination of file-based technologies and includes a practical demonstration of tapeless production in action from the IBC TV News team. Visitors will find a presentation theatre
housing case studies for, among others, live sports, automated QC and cloud creation for brands and broadcasters as well as ‘look and learn’ presentations by current users. These masterclasses include speakers from MTV, ITV, Princess Productions, BBC, Channel 4 and more. The Future Zone, meanwhile,
provides a tantalising glimpse into the future of tomorrow’s electronic media. Rather than being a commercially available product, the visionary
technology on display will make visitors step back and re-think what is possible. Also included in the Future Zone are carefully selected Posters, chosen by the IBC Technical Papers Committee for their relevance to

the subjects of IBC2012’s conference programme and interest to IBC attendees. And finally, over the years the
IBC Awards has become established as one of the most important facets of the show – a glittering ceremony where the brightest and the best of the broadcast industry get honoured. The Awards Ceremony, which is free to all IBC attendees and takes place in the Auditorium at the RAI on Sunday 9 September, is rounded off by the Best Conference Paper Award and the Exhibition Design Awards, both of which play a key part in making sure that the Conference and the Exhibition remain fresh, relevant and enticing to 50,000 visitors.
