to family members who weren’t re- ceiving the newsletter.” Another innovation Kleinheinz

established for the 147th FRG was in the area of fundraising. “Initially, we didn’t have much money, and we didn’t want our events to be an ex- pense for our families,” she says. “So we coordinated with every VFW and American Legion post in the state of Wisconsin and set up an event every month that was sponsored by a dif- ferent region.” The events included a holiday party, a spring picnic, and even a massage day, with services donated by a local massage school. In the fall, a local farm provided hay- rides for the children. “Basically, we just tried to incorporate the commu- nity,” says Kleinheinz. “Everyone we talked to wanted to help us out.” Kleinheinz’s favorite event was held in conjunction with Operation Snuggles, where quilts and blankets were given out to servicemembers and their children. “It was an unforget- table moment, because you knew that each of those children would be using their blanket for strength and comfort during a very hard time,” she says. “Those blankets were truly made with love and dedication to our families and servicemen and -women.” In February, David L. McGinnis, acting secretary of defense for reserve affairs, presented the 147th FRG with an award for best Army National Guard FRG. “That was amazing,” says Kleinheinz. “Going to the Pentagon as a military spouse was an overwhelm- ing experience, and to go there for an honor like that was very humbling. I’m forever grateful for my role in the FRG. It was a very small role in comparison to those who sacrifice so much for us.”
