Communication helps your association reach out to members, alert you when action is required, and advocate for military people. Your email address is key to timely communication.

I saw a picture recently of the com- puter Steve Wozniak designed for Apple Computer in the 1970s. It was the fi rst ever created for the company, and it looked like some sort of medieval item — barely more powerful than two tin cans attached by a string. It got me thinking about how far we have come in being able to communicate with one another and how important it is to stay in touch. MOAA has been in existence since 1929,

when we began with only 63 members. Today, your association has more than 377,000 members. We think of ourselves as an organization of strong families and friends. Spouses are key to enhancing our strength and relevance. To keep our one powerful voice, MOAA continually builds relationships and forges strong bonds by staying in touch. Many of you are members of our chapters, coun- cils, or board of directors and support us with your presence at our conferences and board meetings throughout the year. Oth- ers attend our signature events, such as the Warrior-Family Symposium, which keeps our wounded warriors and caregivers in the minds of the public and policy makers. But many of you can’t attend these

events for various reasons. So we rely on communication vehicles such as Military Offi cer and — more and more often — email newsletters and social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Many members haven’t shared their email addresses with MOAA. Perhaps you

don’t like email and don’t have an address, or perhaps you underestimate how impor- tant it is for us to stay in touch with each other. Now, more than ever, technology can enable us to reach out to you with im- portant information and ideas in the most timely fashion we can. If we have your email address, we can keep you connected to MOAA activities. If your email address changes, please let us know your new one so we can update your record. The association currently is working on a mobile application that will allow members to receive information, legisla- tive alerts, tips, and other useful content. We are excited about this new technology, but good old email remains one of the best methods for staying in touch and commu- nicating with elected offi cials. And please know MOAA needs spouse email addresses, too. Out of 86,000 spouse records, we have email addresses for only 14,000 of them. We are developing more and more information and content just for spouses, and your spouse’s email address will allow us to stay in touch and better serve spouses, too. If you haven’t already done so, please call (800) 234-MOAA (6622) or email MOAA’s Member Service Center, msc@ moaa.org, to provide your email address.
