More than 700 competitors took part in the first ever Nunney International Horse Trials, but the honours went to local rider Kate Allen, from Shepton Mallet, who won the KBIS Equestrian Insurance- sponsored CIC2* with her 11-year-old gelding Final Encore.

The event took place near Frome in Somerset and an array of tradestands, a dressage demonstration, plenty of action over the fixed fences and show jumping in the main arena on the final day attracted a wealth of visitors.

But it was Kate, who works as a veterinary surgeon at Langford near Bristol, who stole the limelight on the final day of competition on Sunday with a foot perfect show jumping round after a fast clear across country. However, 34-year-old Kate admitted she had had to survive a sticky moment out on the cross

country course when her horse hit the top of the turtle fence.

She explained: “He caught his front legs and I had to sit tight. Luckily I didn’t come off and he went on to do a really good round. It was absolutely brilliant. The going rode beautifully and the sun was shining as I rode.”

Kate keeps her horse at Rosamund Green Farm near Shepton Mallet where former Junior European team member Millie Dumas is based.

Millie, 19, also posted some exceptional results over the course of the three days including finishing fourth in a novice class on Atlanta VII which proved the icing on the cake for the venue’s owner Angela Yeoman who said: “The committee has done a marvelous job and I’m really pleased with the event. Thank goodness the rain held off. I’m especially pleased by daughter Sue Larson’s horse Atlanta VII who came fourth in a novice

class which made it a very special family occasion.” Millie also won and finished second in the intermediate novice on Daisy Duke, a skewbald mare owned by fellow Young Rider Adam Harvey who is currently sitting his A’levels and Georgia Hatton- Brown’s Onno respectively.

Also competing was Sam Watson currently based at Salisbury with his fiancee Hannah, “The course was an open galloping course with every jump so well built and the ground was perfect, which is amazing considering the rain we have had a huge pat on the back for the organisers”. Sam and Hannah have a busy time ahead with the Olympics and then their wedding not to mention fitting in a honeymoon,

we wish them all the very best of success.

The competition drew plaudits from many competitors who were all vocal in their praise of its organization and the ground. Organiser John Colson said: “We are thrilled with how the competition has gone and all the committee and helpers deserve a huge thank you. The feedback we have had has been extremely positive. We have also received some very constructive criticism which we will be acting upon to ensure that our event improves year on year.

Becky Littleton and Trilby Crewes both had excellent rounds with Becky coming 3rd. Both are based at Helland in Cornwall
