2) That Exmoor pony foals leaving the moors and not returning to a free-living situation are no longer hot branded.


3) That hot branding of semi-feral ponies living in moorland situations is only carried out when necessary for their welfare and management. And that the number of brands is kept to a minimum, with no branding on the sensitive scapula area of the shoulder.


4) That alternative methods of visual ID are sought to replace all hot branding.


We are Exmoor pony enthusiasts and enjoy breeding and training Exmoor ponies to a high level. We don’t hot brand our own foals and also have non-branded moor bred stock. There are striking differences between the branded and unbranded ponies. Although branded ponies can go on to make outstanding performance ponies , we feel they would be easier to train and even better, happier and more confident if they weren’t hot branded multiple times as foals, and therefore did not have an inherent fear of the memory of lasting pain.


The South West region, with its Exmoor, Dartmoor and other native pony herds, has the opportunity to showcase British Native ponies to the world, and what an amazing equestrian opportunity there is for us to also be leading the way in equine welfare and wellbeing. Equestrian tourism for Exmoor National Park and the entire South West would certainly be positively enhanced if the multiple hot branding of Exmoor ponies was reduced to where absolutely necessary for welfare and management of the ponies. Reform to the hot branding system would be good for the ponies, good for tourism, and good for business.
