RAY OUDKERK MASTER OF TEACHING (DANCE)

What was your background before starting your studies with the RAD? After completing a degree in dance and philosophy and a PGCE in dance I have taught and led dance in a number of secondary schools for the past fourteen years. Having become an advanced skills teacher in 2009 I wanted to reflect on my pedagogy, broaden my educational perspective and continue revitalising my practice in a focused way.

What areas of the programme do you find most useful? In making the time to consider my own practice within the context of philosophy in education, studying on the Masters has reinvigorated my teaching. Debating the work of academics and practitioners, from those whose work underpins popular educational practice to those whose ideas challenge dogmatic ideologies, has brought me deeper understanding of my educational potential as a teacher and my preferred future career development.

As a distance learner, how do you combine your work/study commitments? Despite the challenges in working full-time and studying part- time, the RAD’s Distance Learning framework has enabled me to maintain a balance between work commitments and the demands of the Masters.

How has studying with the RAD enhanced your teaching career? Since starting on the Masters programme I have led professional INSET courses for dance teachers and I hope it will enable career possibilities as a member of a school senior leadership team.

Why would you recommend this programme? The programme is designed to cater for different personal interests in dance education and ensure an excellent understanding of the key thinking and issues that underpin all educational practices. Supportive tutors have been encouraging and given me the confidence to develop my own thinking and projects in each module.

What are your future aspirations? I look forward to graduating in the knowledge that my work during the programme has been personally enriching and enhanced my educational practice immeasurably. Studying for a doctorate has also become a more tangible future ambition.
