The perfect blend The Batchmixer enables the operator to mix powders with different

characteristics in a contained environment The mixing of powders is a common and critical procedure of

many solids processing industries, which places high demands on safety and hygiene, but also on the homogeneity of the finished mix. Achieving a perfect blend of two or more components racks many a process engineer's brain. The aim of each mixture is to obtain a uniform distribution of all components. The lower the variance of the detected concentration of the samples, in comparison with the composition of the mixture, the better the quality of the mixing.

Partical segregation Statistically however, the perfect homogeneity may not be achieved. At best, one achieves a random mixture, i.e. a mixture in which you find the same amount of particles of any component at all locations, equally proportioned in the mixture as a whole (stochastic homogeneity). This type of mixture generally achieves the best results, provided the different powders have the same physical properties. However, different product properties such as density, surface texture and different particle size to name a few, lead to segregation. With significant loss in quality when mixing milled materials, the pharmaceutical industry is particularly concerned with the problem of particle segregation.

PTS Batchmixer – The fully contained powder blender DEC has developed the PTS Batchmixer to blend active substances without modifying their physical properties and without the risk of contamination for operators. It transfers, mixes and discharges products fully automatically by means of vacuum and pressure and is especially suited to meet the needs of the pharma industry.

Flexible scope of application

With the same unit, different batch sizes can be run, even at laboratory scale. The Batchmixer blends powders with large differences in ratio (1/10,000) and different properties, ensuring perfect homogeneity and complete containment. The system comprises a main chamber with an integrated central deflector, allowing a homogeneous powder distribution. A PTS powder transfer system with two tangential inlets is installed on top of the chamber. Powders are introduced automatically and circulated in the chamber.

The first mixing effect happens in the PTS body, when the two jets of powder meet, thus increasing the speed of the mixing process and enhancing its effectiveness. The materials are transferred by dense phase and as the speed at which the powders are circulated is limited, particles are not damaged or subject to attrition. The system can operate under inert conditions allowing the mixing of hygroscopic, oxygen sensitive or explosive powders. Additives may be introduced without process interruption. With the MPTS sampling device, representative samples can be obtained automatically during the mixing process.

This technology is easy to integrate into production lines. Powders can be transferred automatically from drums, sacks or even process equipment (e.g. a dryer, etc.). After mixing, the system can be automatically discharged into the next production step. It has no moving or rotating mechanical parts, requires therefore little maintenance and is easy to clean (CIP/SIP).

Official test results have shown that the Batchmixer obtains a homogeneous mixture of salicylic acid and lactose of 0,1 % w/w
