editor’s note

Service will be king Judging by the response of readers and advertisers alike, our decision to re-brand Storage Networking Solutions UK as Data Centre Solutions UK seems to have been extremely well received. And, when you read the many and varied articles in the February 2012 issue of DCSUK, it’s not suprising that the focus of many businesses is changing - whether voluntarily or somewhat reluctantly.

Our lead article, which presents detailed analysis of the Cloud Industry Forum’s most recent UK market analysis of the Cloud market, demonstrates just how quickly momentum has built in the area of managed services/cloud computing.

What is missing, however, and what the Cloud Industry Forum is trying to address, is the existence of any kind of industry standards or framework allowing end users to compare cloud offerings on a like for like basis or, at the very least, have some kind of reassurance that the managed services they are going to be using meet some kind of benchmark criteria.

As some of us attending the recent Cloud Expo discovered, the customer interface is crucial. The technology exists to make cloud and managed services a reality. However, how customers access them, and ensuring that this access meets expectations will be crucial.

At Cloud Expo, some of us exhibitors wanting to gain entrance in order to obtain our badges, pre show opening, were passed around most of Kensington (!) until we found the right entrance. Not a good customer experience. But the show itself was highly enjoyable and very useful.

Similarly for cloud and managed services, when customers make contact with queries, they want to be confident that they will be dealt with professionally and quickly. If not, they may well choose to go elsewhere.
