In Hickory, N.C., the Lenoir-Rhyne University Playmakers presented Amina S. McIntyre’s In the Garden Sept. 28-Oct. 2. The play is a creative retelling of the Song of Solomon. McIntyre is a playwright with a mas- ter in fine arts in creative writing and a master of arts in African-American and African diaspora studies. Dream- like and surreal, this retelling of the biblical story used lush language, human characters and shadow pup- pets to create a fantastical walled gar- den where “Shelly,” held captive by her elder brother “Benji,” is discov- ered by Solomon.
Dan Davis, a visiting assistant profes- sor of classical archaeology at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, will teach a new January-term course on under-
water archaeology in 2012. Davis’ course introduces students to the his- tory of seafaring and how underwa- ter archaeology helps us understand ancient, medieval and early mod- ern people. “We will also talk about broader themes, such as piracy in ancient times and piracy today, and how the ethics of archaeology, par- ticularly underwater archaeology, are still being debated today,” he said. Davis has worked as a marine archaeologist on projects in the U.S., Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Cyprus, Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia. His interest in the field began when he served as a U.S. Navy hardhat diver aboard submarine rescue ships.
