to do that, if not from God? Fourth, there are the life and
teachings of Jesus, about which more will be said later. • There is no source of helpful energy outside yourself that you can reliably draw on. It won’t be said of you, as it has been said of others, that “those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). • You can’t look forward to the pos- sibility of having a transforming encounter with God, an encounter that brings you a significantly higher quality of life than you may be cur- rently experiencing. You won’t be able to say, with
the apostle Paul, “It is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). Nor will you be able to speak of knowing Christ “and the power of his resurrection” (Phi- lippians 3:10). On the other hand, you can take
the risk of believing in the God made clearest to Christians in the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, a personal force of love that changes people’s lives; brings life out of conditions of death; goes where love is needed most; builds inclusive communities of loving and faithful followers; subverts conventional wisdom; is gracious and gives even when we don’t deserve it; and makes us good people so we will naturally do good deeds. Surely we would want to say with
hymn writer Isaac Watts that “love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all” (“When I Sur- vey the Wondrous Cross,” Evangeli- cal Lutheran Worship, 803). Surely if that God is real, as Chris-
tianity has claimed for 2,000 years, we can only, in the words of Martin Luther’s catechism, “thank and praise, serve and obey him.” M
