BIG Shoes to Fill

I am extremely humbled with the shoes I have to fill. For the better part of 29 years, Roger Val had his name attached to this article keeping NCGA members up to speed with any and all current news pertaining to his department. As I take on a new

challenge I am thankful I had the privilege of working for Roger and the NCGA for five years

A lot is in store for the future of NCGA Championships. We will start with improved online scoring as the championships and events department undergoes a series of electronic facelifts.

before I left to pursue other opportunities in the golf administration. Once the word of his impending retirement surfaced, my fond memories of working on the Monterey Peninsula led me to throw my hat in the ring to take the reigns of the largest tournament program in the country. I waited (some- what) patiently. For a couple of years Roger would claim retirement was imminent but then return for another season, earning him the nickname “Brett Favre.” Now that he is happily

retired, it is time to look to the future and I am ex- tremely excited about what lies ahead for the thousands of NCGA members who participate in our events

each year. During Roger’s tenure the NCGA cham- pionship schedule grew to more than 400 tournament days in a calendar year, and included NCGA champi- onships, NCGA, CGA and USGA-qualifying, collegiate events as well as events run in cooperation with other associations such as the JGANC, PWGA and WGANC. The big news for 2011

is the NCGA Junior Tour has joined forces with the NCPGA to create the Junior Tour of Northern California (JTNC). Under the leadership of newly ap- pointed Manager of Junior Golf Operations Tony Yick, juniors across the region will continue to enjoy the best possible championship experience but now with an added flare brought from the NCPGA’s staff. A complete recap of the merger can be found on the NCGA’s website, ncga.org. A lot is in store for

the future of NCGA Championships. We will start with improved on- line scoring as the cham- pionships and events department undergoes a series of electronic face- lifts. More information will be readily available including hole-by- hole scorecards, course statistics, player photos, etc. on the Association website. Scrolling leader boards will be available at some events where you can enjoy watching leader board updates from inside club restau- rants. My hope is that in

the not-too-distant future, players as well as NCGA members spectating from their home or office will enjoy a tournament experi- ence second to none. We will continue to

improve our online reg- istration process. We are constantly fielding requests to upgrade our system and are working on a process that will allow club officials to register players electronically instead of using a paper entry. My final message is that I am here to provide NCGA members the best championship experience possible. If there is anything my staff or I can provide, please do not hesitate to get

in touch with us (831/625- 4653). The best way we can make improvements is if you make your voice heard; I am looking forward to listening to any and all ideas members may have. I would like to close by thanking Roger Val for leaving behind a top-notch championship program with a terrific staff and wishing him the best of luck in his retirement. You will be missed.
