Donna Archer

RESIDENCE: Incline Village, Nevada MEMBER CLUBS: Monterey Peninsula CC, Peninsula GCC and Arrow- creek CC FAMILY: Daugh- ters Elizabeth and Marilyn and seven grandchildren. Late husband George was a professional golfer who won 12 times on Tour, in- cluding the 1969 Masters, and 19 times on the Cham- pions Tour. PGA TOUR: Travel on the PGA Tour today is so much different from when we were on the road; there were no private jets or luxury accommoda- tions. We had a station wagon and I drove across the country 30 times with my family. George would go to bed early on the road so there were times I was

reading in the bathtub with the kids. It was

like a circus; it was

extraordinarily fun and a huge adventure. MASTERS VICTORY: I don’t think either of us understood the signifi cance of his Masters victory. We were young and he won on his third trip there which was unusual. He didn’t know the far reaching effects of the victory. It is signifi cant but

certainly doesn’t pay the bills 40 years later (laughs). George is the only person from Northern California to win the Masters. The big- gest signifi cance is bring- ing that trophy back to the Bay Area and Peninsula GCC. MY TEACHER: When my husband was sick he said he wanted to teach me to play so I would have golf to remember him by. When I play now he per- meates the air. LITERACY FOUNDATION: I created a foundation because my husband couldn’t read past a third-grade level. The George Archer Memorial Foundation for Literacy is a way of giving back to him and turning his pain into another person’s joy by helping children to read and write. I don’t want others to go through what George did; when you can read you have the universe at your fi ngertips. We want to give as many children as we can opportunities to read. GEORGE’S LEGACY: The wholeness of George was never apparent be- cause of his hidden secret. He was an extraordinary person and athlete who had very few things but molded himself into top form with a little help from me and others. His story is amazing.

Golf provided me my life. Most everything I do today is because of golf.
