Bobby Jones Open in Northern California

BOUNDARY OAK GC will have an easy-to-understand tee sheet June 13-15 as the annual Bobby Jones Open is staged in Northern California for the fi rst time. The event is open only to those who share some de- rivative of the Robert Jones name (Bob, Bobby, Robert, Roberta) and their guests. The other qualifi cation is that entrants must love the game and respect its history. To simplify communication, entrants must have a nick- name such as “Computer,” “Bingo” or “Body Shop.” Robert Jones of Bloom- fi eld, Michigan began the tournament in 1979 with four other Bob Joneses. More than 350 participants have played in the event in the 31 years since. The tournament hon- ors Bobby Jones, golf’s greatest amateur and only

grand-slam winner, and donates proceeds to research to fi ght Syringomyelia, the disease Jones contracted in 1948 and courageously battled until his death in 1971. The Georgian took home 13 major titles highlighted by the U.S. and British Opens and U.S. and British Amateur titles captured in 1930. Known for his class and sports- manship, Jones cofounded the Masters in 1934 with in- vestment banker Clifford Roberts after retiring from amateur competition. Since 2005, the tourna- ment has raised more than $193,000 for Syringomy- elia research, recovery, scholarships and support. Robert W. Jones of Walnut Creek is coordinating this year’s event and interest- ed competitors can con- tact him at Robert.Jones@ Whiting-Turner.com.

A starting

time at AUGUSTA NATIONAL just got a little

bit easier. In an effort

to reach a more diverse and younger audience, the Mas- ters is featured in EA Sports’ current edition of “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12” golf game franchise. The latest golf video game uses laser scanning technology to depict the famed Georgia layout in incredible detail. Program- mers worked tirelessly for three years to duplicate the nuances of Augusta including elevation changes and even blooms on the dogwoods and azaleas (pictured right).

National Chairman Billy Payne commented, “EA Sports, Tiger Woods and the PGA Tour have devel- oped an extremely successful franchise that responds to one of the popular entertain- ment choices of kids today. We hope our inclusion will foster an appreciation for the history and traditions of the Masters and inspire the next generation of golfers.” Gamers can compete

against Tiger Woods’ scores from his four victories and enjoy commentary from Jim Nantz and David Feherty and advice from Augusta caddies. The game went on sale a week before the Masters and
