Matt Cain

Q&A

With 21 1/3 innings pitched and only one unearned run in three postseason starts, San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain certainly earned his World Series ring and legion of admirers.

While the Alabama native doesn’t garner the most attention on the talented Giants pitching staff, no one in the organization undervalues Cain’s talent, work ethic and leadership. The former all-star is one of the most underrated pitchers in the game but statistical improvement each year has turned the 26-year-old into a serious Cy Young contender. The down-to-earth athlete enjoys quiet time with his wife and daughter away from the limelight and the occasional off-season golf round. Armed with an athletic go-for-broke golf swing and, surprisingly enough, a belly putter, the World Series champion was patient and polite giving interviews and signing autographs while making the cut during the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in February. –Hilary Heieck
