HOWREY DISSOLVES PARTNERSHIP
Howrey LLP’s executive committee announced on March 9 that its partners had voted to dissolve the firm’s partnership—effective from March 15—and wind down its affairs.
Access to Howrey’s website is blocked and visitors are directed to a message from the firm. It says: “All Howrey’s offices are scheduled to close. Te firm will maintain a small office to house the staff handling the wind-down of operations.”
A committee of partners has been formed to oversee an orderly wind-down of the firm over time, as required by the Howrey partnership agreement.

A group of Howrey IP litigators has joined Winston & Strawn LLP, the firm announced on March 17.
Winston & Strawn has also added former Howrey IP litigators to its Chicago and Washington, DC offices.

Stephen Cagle has become managing partner of Winston & Strawn’s new Houston office. Litigation partners Floyd Nation, Melinda Patterson, Jeffrey Phillips, Eric Schlichter, Merritt Westcott, Gregory Duffy, Gary Fischmann, John Keville, Stephen Lundwall, Brian Simmons and Tyler Van Houtan join Cagle in Houston.
Arnold & Porter LLP has landed a patent litigation team from Howrey, the firm announced on March 11.
Te team of 13 lawyers has moved to Arnold & Porter’s Washington, DC and Los Angeles offices.
Lawyers joining the Washington, DC office include partners Matthew Wolf and Edward Han. Tey are joined by counsels John Nilsson and Marc Cohn.
Jennifer Sklenar and Wallace Wu join as partner and counsel respectively. Tey are based in Arnold & Porter’s Los Angeles office.
Te firm sent Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letters to certain employees on March 9, in accordance with federal and applicable state laws that require some employers to give advanced notice of significant lay-offs to their employees.
Bob Ruyak, chairman and chief executive officer of Howrey, said: “Te firm had experienced disappointing financial performances over the past two years and subsequently several partners had resigned. Tis resulted in the conclusion that an orderly wind-down of the firm’s activities over time was the only practical alternative.”
Howrey lawyers have been moving to new firms in the US and Europe over the last few months.

Arnold & Porter has also expanded its Silicon Valley office with a former Howrey trial attorney.
Paul Alexander joined the firm on March 17. He practises civil trial work that includes patent and antitrust litigation.
Alexander said: “Arnold & Porter has an incredible breadth of experience in complex commercial litigation, as well as outstanding intellectual property and antitrust groups, which overlap nicely with my practice.”
