Cuiwan is currently working as a taxation accountant with Singapore Airlines Limited. She is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Singapore (ICPAS).
I chose Essex after hearing a positive recommendation from a friend who had already graduated from the University.
Essex Business School was also ranked well in various league tables which I looked at when doing my research.
Cuiwan Lindy Lim, BA Accounting and Finance ’09, Bedok, Singapore
Settling into university life was challenging at the beginning as being from Singapore meant I was a very long way from home. However, the people in my flat and on my course were extremely friendly, and I quickly made some wonderful friends.

Can I study abroad? We offer international exchange variants for all our three-year courses. These courses enable you to broaden your understanding of the subject by studying at a partner institution in the EU or in the rest of the world, as the third year of a four-year course. Apart from the year abroad, our international exchange courses are identical to the corresponding three-year course.
What can I go on to do with a degree in finance
The School were fantastic in supporting all students. Our lecturers were always willing to help, allowing us to visit them whenever we needed guidance. They
were also happy for us to e-mail them at any time with urgent queries, which they always answered quickly. The School also created course materials giving easy to follow, detailed information to help us further in our studies.
During my time at the University, I joined several clubs and societies such as the Debating Society, the Classical Music Society and the Malaysian Society. I particularly enjoyed my role as a student ambassador, which allowed me to show prospective students around the Colchester Campus and talk about my personal experiences.
I would describe my time at Essex as fruitful, memorable and fulfilling. I learnt how to live independently and gain all the necessary knowledge I needed for my career. I am proud that I was a student of the University and look forward to taking forth everything I learnt from my time spent there.

How will I be taught and assessed?
As well as providing you with knowledge of a subject area, you will also develop transferable skills, such as analytical and communication skills. Teaching methods include a combination of: lectures from our academic staff; guest speaker sessions; tutorials; class exercises,
including discussion of case studies and journal articles; computer-based lab sessions; and online resources.
One of the distinguishing features of our courses is that they all share a common first year of taught modules. Therefore, before you enter your second year, you can opt for any of the accounting, finance, and banking courses offered by Essex Business School, whether or not you were originally registered for that course.
Assessment includes a wide range of methods. There are mid-term class tests, individual essays and reports, group reports, individual and group presentations, and written examinations. A combination of assessments is used for all programmes. These assessments test your understanding of theoretical concepts, application in business practice and an ability to analyse and evaluate the same. Your final degree class is based on your results in the second and third years.
