Top ten for research We enjoy an international reputation for the quality of our research. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008), we were rated ninth out of 159 institutions. Over half of our subject areas were rated in the top ten nationally, with four rated in the top five, confirming Essex as the leading social science university in the UK. student experience Essex is rated fifteenth in the UK for offering the best all-round student experience (Times Higher Education Survey, January 2010). Undergraduate students form a lively and supportive 7,300-strong community. satisfaction We are in the top 20 nationally for student satisfaction according to the National Student Survey (NSS) for 2010.
Eighty-eight per cent of our students expressed overall satisfaction with their course – placing the University sixteenth for student satisfaction in the country.
