I decided to come to the University of Essex after conducting research into universities throughout
the whole of the United Kingdom and the EU. I chose Essex for three main reasons; it has very high academic standards, it offers a variety of courses that appealed to me and lastly it has a friendly atmosphere.
Mariyana Garabetova, second-year BSc Marketing and Human Resource Management* student, Plovdiv, Bulgaria
I find the staff to be very helpful and supportive at the Southend Campus. They are committed to their students and make me feel comfortable and at ease, which is brilliant as I am a very long way from my family home. Freshers’ Week was an amazing time as it introduced me to other people and the social life that is available to students at the University. They arranged lots of activities to help people get to know each other easily.
Student profile
including: lectures; guest speaker sessions; tutorials; class exercises comprising of individual and group work during seminar time including discussion of case studies and journal articles; online resources (Virtual Learning Environment), and signposting to additional learning resources.
How will I be assessed? Assessment includes mid-term class tests, individual essays and reports, group reports, individual and group presentations, reflective journal keeping and written examinations. The assessments test understanding of theoretical concepts, application in business practice and an ability to analyse and evaluate the same.
So far my favourite module is The Business Creation and Growth Process, as it is a relatively new business theory. I love it because I prefer the hands-on approach to the industry and I really enjoy participating in the discussions. The facilities at Southend are first-class
and there is an excellent library, which has really helped with my studying. There are great study areas that have cutting-edge IT facilities and fast connections to the University’s network and the internet. The building is very modern and there is the Students’ Union café, just around the corner, which is an excellent social space. It is nice to be able to socialise with friends between lectures as there are pool tables and budget-friendly, healthy lunches.
I have become a student representative for the first-year undergraduate business students. I really enjoy this role as I have helped organise our Christmas ball and numerous student activities. One of the best things I have done since coming to England is taking a walk down the pier with my friends; it is the longest pier in Europe and it was such a fun day! University so far has been challenging, but utterly rewarding, enjoyable and fun. I have had the best time and cannot wait until next term starts!
