After graduating, James started working for the Government Statistical Service in London, analysing data for national statistics.

I chose Essex because the Department had a very respectful scoring in the league tables and conducted research

to a high standard. After visiting, I knew I wanted to study there because of the excellent facilities and the close-knit community. I knew that having everything on campus meant it would be easy to make friends and get to my lectures quickly, but having the town a change of scenery.

I settled in to university life comfortably. I thought that living in a flat with other people might be intimidating, but it was great to have a diverse range of people to explore the campus with.

Having no previous experience of psychology, I particularly enjoyed learning about various classic studies in my first year. I also enjoyed the research and

statistics modules as these built on the knowledge I gained from my A-levels and it was gratifying to see these skills put to use. I also found the Social Psychology module really interesting as it helped me understand why people act in certain ways and gave me a whole new perspective on society.

I was an active member of the Poker Society, and in my third year the members helped me by acting as participants for my dissertation, in which I investigated how people make judgements in poker.

I have so many fantastic memories from my time at Essex and it’s difficult to choose a favourite. Most of my fondest memories are from nights out with my flatmates or having a kick around on the astroturf. I had a great three years and have learnt so much both academically and from meeting new people from all over the world of whom, I will stay in touch with for years to come.

After graduating, Sarah was selected to work as a research assistant, in the Department of Psychology, here at Essex.

Sarah Moulton, BSc Psychology ’10, Long Melford, Suffolk

After college, I worked for a few years but I had always wanted to study psychology. A friend, who was studying psychology at Essex at the time, absolutely loved the course and urged me to apply. When I visited the Colchester Campus it was clear it had everything a student could possibly need and I found that the Department was extremely well equipped, with all the latest technology and equipment relevant to the course.

I was worried about going back to study after working, however after the first few weeks I was not worried at all. Everything I needed to begin the course was provided and the Student Handbook answered all the questions that I had.

The staff and lecturers in the Department were fantastic. If I had a personal worry they were always there to provide support. Academically, if I had a

query or concern they were easy to contact and very approachable. The History of Psychology was one of my favourite modules as it was a chance to learn about how psychology came to be as it is today – the lectures were always made so interesting.

My current role as a research assistant, here at Essex, means that I am continually employing the knowledge and skills gained throughout my degree. My experience of working with the EEG (electroencephalogram) during my final-year project, has given me real confidence in this area and I have since carried out research on two EEG studies for academics in our department.

I have so many lovely memories from my time as a student at Essex, all for different reasons. My favourites include handing in important pieces of work, sitting my final exams, our last summer ball and graduation day!
