HE VACUTEX system from Polytype-owned Pagendarm is equipped with venturi jet nozzles, arranged on both sides of an easy-running idle roll. The venturi effect produces a low pressure by which the web is drawn down, thereby increasing the contact arc on the idle roll that secures a straight and soft passage of the web through the dryer.
Critical products with a strong tendency to curl or films of inferior quality run perfectly even over the whole web width with low tension and thus providing a reliable and most perfect drying result, claims the company.
nozzles system for the nozzle bank located above the web. These nozzles can be switched, and can be set to impingement or tangential airflow to achieve optimum drying conditions. The upper drying air has virtually no influence on web position or the set web tensions, and can be set to achieve optimum drying results.

Due to the gentle but consequent fixation of the web on the idler rolls it is not necessary to equipped the Vacutex dryer with a drive systems. Speeds up to 500m/min can be realized without any need of extra drives. Unlike conventional air floatation dryers or support roll dryers the
Vacutex system allows specialised drying settings. The operational window can be set to extremes – allowing to run between drying from below only by using the Vacutex nozzles only, splitting the drying air 50:50 between upper and lower nozzles or supplying the air from above only resulting in a conventional roller support dryer. The interdependence of web position, web tension and air speed setting that always exists in air-flotation dryers is virtually non-existent in the Vacutex dryer. The coated web is guided at all air settings. For example, the lateral offset of a 1600mm wide LDPE film with a thickness of 30 µm in a 30 metre long dryer is only +/- 1mm at a web tension of 40N/m. This, says Pagendarm, is unmatched by any conventional drying method. To increase further the operational flexibility Pagendarm offers a twin
HE LATEST developments in UV curing were on display at Labelexpo Americas late last year. GEW showcased these and introduced its new Service Plus three-year warranty scheme. The company has introduced to the market the next generation of its e-Brick power supplies that incorporates new design elements to increase energy efficiency. Customers can now select the power level required for the job depending on the properties of the ink, coating or adhesive at the appropriate press speed. Rather than being manufacturer-set, users are now able to select whatever power they need to print a specific job, whilst being assured of the highest level of energy efficiency.
“The tendency has been to use full power to combat the risk of under- cure,” says Brian Wenger, president of GEW’s USA operation. “Our aim is to reduce energy costs and prevent spoiled print jobs by using the minimum power required to cure, with extra in reserve for the more difficult jobs. We have achieved this through further development of the e-Brick electronic power supplies, UV lamps, reflectors and software and by developing a range of scientific tools to monitor UV output.”

Along with the latest versions of its on-line and hand held UV monitoring systems to ensure optimised cure for the job in hand and extend lamp life, GEW says it can now offer customers remote diagnostics that enable minor issues that affect UV curing to be corrected via the internet, eliminating downtime and service calls. In addition, average system standby can be reduced to well below 15 percent through the use of GEW’s Greentimer facility, claims the company. “We have introduced customers to the benefits of our new Service Plus scheme,” adds Wenger. “All GEW UV systems carry a full one year warranty from new. Joining this new servicing plan is a no cost option and entitles end users to increase their warranty to three years, subject to using competitively priced lamps and parts from GEW. Free 24-hour worldwide telephone support is included. GEW: T: +44 (0) 1737 824 500
